Jerome's obituary

Retired Army Specialist Jerome James Long, III. (J.J.), of Colorado Springs, CO, formerly Plantation, FL and New Orleans, LA, passed away June 25th.

Jerome was the proud father of Jaelyn and Brooklyn Long, of Colorado Springs, CO. He leaves behind his mother Karin Moore of Harahan, LA, sister Brandi Long of Arlington, VA, sister Nicole Long, and significant other Enid Ruiz-Mattei of Colorado Springs, CO. He has been reunited in death with his father, Jerome Long, Jr. and grandparents Rosemarie and Emory Moore and Shirley and Jerry Long. He is survived by many aunts, uncles, and cousins.

Jerome was born in Metairie, LA and attended schools in Jefferson Parish before moving to Plantation, FL where he graduated from Plantation High School in 1994.

A proud veteran, Jerome served in the U.S. Army from 2004 – 2009 with the 4th Infantry Division at Fort Carson, CO. He served his country with honor and dedication during the Iraq war and received numerous commendations including the Army Commendation Medal, Army Achievement Medal, Army Good Conduct Medal, National Defense Service Medal, Global War on Terrorism Service Medal, Iraq Campaign Medal with Campaign Star, Army Service Ribbon, Overseas Service Ribbon, Combat Action Badge, and Mechanic and Driver Badge. After serving in the military, Jerome worked as a millwright. Later, he obtained his Bachelor’s degree in Business Administration and Accounting from University of Colorado followed by a Master Degree in Accounting from Colorado State. Recently, he was employed at Plante Moran as a Tax Staff, while preparing for the CPA certification. When Jerome wasn’t at work, or spending time with his daughters and loved ones, you could find him with his “little buddy” Loki, smoking a good cigar and tending to his plants. His neighbors enjoyed the tomatoes and peppers from his garden, while his coworkers relished the delicious rum cake from his father’s recipe. Some parting words from Jerome – “you play stupid games, you win stupid prizes”.

Funeral mass will be held at St. Rita’s of Harahan on July 22, 2025 with visitation from 1pm – 2pm and Mass at 2pm. Jerome’s remains will be laid to rest with full military honors at Southeast Louisiana Veterans Cemetery on July 23, 2025 at 10am. A celebration of life will take place in Colorado Springs, details to follow.  In lieu of flowers, donations in Jerome’s name can be made to Mt. Carmel Veterans Service Center.
