JEREMY ROTH

December 23, 1941 - February 23, 2023

It is with great sadness we announce the sudden passing of Jeremy Roth in his 81st year. Pre-deceased by his parents Henry Roth (who after immigrating from the Ukraine) wrote an American classic “Call It Sleep” on Jewish immigrant life in New York) and Muriel Parker Roth (an American concert pianist and composer) late of Albuquerque, New Mexico.

Born in New York, raised in Maine, he attended Phillips Exeter Academy and subsequently Harvard, graduating with a BA in math. He then volunteered with “Teachers for Africa” for two years returning to graduate from Harvard with an MA in geophysics. He also was a proud member of MENSA.

After serving in the US Army he moved to Canada where he became the chief geophysicist of AMAX Exploration in the 70’s. In 1984 he founded his own consulting company Stratagex Ltd. which took him around the globe. He loved the Canadian culture and in his spare time he enjoyed watching hockey.

He was a dynamic founder of the KEGS Foundation and the first Chair for over two decades. Through his leadership at the KEGS Foundation, Jerry was an unparalleled advocate for students in geophysics and the geosciences in Canada, working tirelessly to encourage investment and education in the next generation of geophysicists.

He was a member of the Houston Geophysical Society and his presence at industry gatherings (KEGS, BCGS, SEG, TGDG, PDAC and many others) was expected and his thoughtful, analytical commentary and participation in all things geophysical will be sorely missed.

He was most comfortable offering advice and suggestions to those he was with. Jerry could often be found, when in the field on a geoscience exploration project, speaking one of the many languages he spoke fluently, while quoting poetry and making sharp jokes.

Jerry loved visiting museums and cultural events in Toronto and around the world, going to opera, jazz festivals and classical music and art wherever he was travelling. He never missed “Word on the Street” and was an avid reader. When he wasn’t playing tennis, he was biking and cross-country skiing, all of which he did until a few days before his death. He enjoyed his summer place in New Hampshire where he tended his vegetable garden, grew roses, cooked his world famous chicken, canoed, kayaked, and visited with his neighbours.

Jerry is survived by his former wife Joy Walker, his son Owen Roth (Helena), his brother, Hugh Roth (Wanatha), countless friends, family and colleagues around the world and his longtime friend, Marilyn Gilbert.
