My condolences go to Dr. Hanways family. Dr. Hanway was full of life. He was an amazing doctor who made the whole process of getting surgery... well you know, less scary. Dr. Hanway always was confident that i’d return to play soccer, therefore it boosted my confidence that i’d return one day too. I thank him so much for not just fixing me physically but for helping me emotionally as well! Thank you Dr. Hanway. You will be missed.
We just heard about Dr. Hanway's passing and are so distraught. He was my son's and daughter's doctor and was such a wonderful man. Our deepest condolences to his family.

I was devastated to hear the news of Dr Hanway's passing. Last year he performed surgery on my daughter to straighten her back. He prayed with us prior to the procedure and it was an amazing success. We are grateful for the kindness and compassion he showed us. He will be greatly missed. - the Trigilio family
So sorry to hear of your loss. We have been blessed by the friendship and godly example of Jeff and your whole family over the many years that we have had the privilege to know you. It was wonderful to learn more about Jeff at the Celebration of Life yesterday, especially the many ways he loved people in big and small ways. Praying for you during this difficult time.
I have such great memories of Jeff as a fabulous, skilled, and caring physician. We trained together at The Hospital for Special Surgery, and I always remember Jeff as a role model for other residents, as well as a gentleman and good friend. He is the kind of doctor who was universally respected by everyone - nurses, OR staff, surgical technicians, other doctors, colleagues, etc. Jeff had the unique ability to instill confidence in everyone around him. Really a special individual. He will be missed tremendously. He leaves behind a beautiful family, and I extend my most sincere sympathy to his family. Scott Rodeo, MD
Our prayers are lifted up to our Heavenly Father for Dr Hanaway's family during this time of great loss!
How fitting for this Godly orthopedic surgeon. He will be missed and greatly remembered!
Psalm 34:18-20 New International Version (NIV)
18 The Lord is close to the brokenhearted and saves those who are crushed in spirit. 19 The righteous person may have many troubles, but the Lord delivers him from them all; 20 he protects all his bones, not one of them will be broken.
Our condolences to the Hanway family! Dr Hanway was an amazing dr! My son is a soccer player and saw dr Hanway for his back injury and the two hit it off immediately. Sorry I never got to meet your son in law. Unexpected events such as this are extremely hard, but wishing you , your daughter and her family the best in their futures.
I first met Dr. Hanway 4 years ago as a travel nurse in the PACU at Children's, and then had the pleasure of working more often with him at PSV. He operated on Fridays, but he would pop into the PACU on other days just to say hi, listen to our concerns, or to check on us. He was a genuinely caring person, a physician with integrity and compassion, and a man who clearly loved what he did. I will never forget watching him dance with his wife at one of PSV's winter galas. There was no question in my mind that he was a guy who clearly loved life! I'll miss the positive energy he radiated in this world. I pray that God gives his family comfort through their memories and the kind words they receive from all the people he impacted in so many meaningful ways. He will be deeply missed and never forgotten... 2 Corinthians 5:1-9.

Our family is shocked with the news of sudden passing away of Dr. Hanaway. Dr. Hanway was a wonderful person, each time Annika & I went to our appointments he took his time & with the smile on his face answered our questions & treated Annika. Not too long ago, Dr. Hanway performed the surgery on Annika & gave my daughter a smile on her face. Dr. Hanway will always remain in our memories, we will think of him everyday & he will b in our prayers. We pray to god to give his family & friends the strength to cope with their loss. Asha, Anil, Anisha & Annika
We are so shocked and saddened to hear of Dr. Hanway's sudden passing. When our 9-year-old needed an ACL replacement, at least four people we knew independently referred us to Dr. Hanway--and it quickly became clear to us why. He immediately made our son and us so comfortable, was patient answering our questions, and performed a flawless surgery that enabled our son to return to soccer, skiing and other activities. We are so saddened by this loss of a good man who helped so many. Our hearts go out to Dr. Hanway's family.
Libby, When our paths crossed at meetings, I loved talking with Jeff about family, life, UVA, and the big picture. A beautiful man, and friend. Our TSRH family will miss him. Steve Richards
Dr. Jeff Hanway has been a colleague since my ED days in the mid 1990s; even then I could see how he always put his patients well-being first. Fast forward to 2000 when I took my special needs 2y/o daughter to see him because I suspected she had scoliosis. I was supremely confident that I was taking her to the best. Her scoliosis continued to progress, but I never felt rushed to make surgery my first decision. Along the way he also performed other surgeries, tendon lengthening etc. Each time I was completely comfortable in my decision because I trusted him so much. We saw him so often over the years, that eventually each office visit started with a hug! In 2009, Katie finally underwent spinal fusion. Jeff's part of the surgery went well, but she had a difficult intubation and suffered a long seizure requiring her to remain in ICU for over a week and then recovery on the ortho floor. He came to see us every single day, even when he wasn't on rotation because he felt so bad that there were complications. That is the kind of man he was. Katie (non-verbal) also held out her hand for him to hold during her appointments and then wouldn't let it go, smiling all the while. He was her favorite. Recently, he became my youngest daughters orthopedist when she was diagnosed with moderate to severe scoliosis. He connected with her on such a level, that when she began wearing her back brace, she wore it for 20 hours a day right out of the gate. The community has lost a rare man; great doctor and all around kind and loving human being. My deepest condolences to the Hanway family

I had the pleasure of working with Jeff for the past year. What a true gentleman and great surgeon! He immediately made me feel part of the Ortho team at Children’s. He was always willing to give me advise without judgement and I definitely will always consider him a mentor. I saw Jeff as someone I hope to aspire to become in the future, not only as a pediatric Orthopaedic surgeon but also as a husband and father. I am blessed to have met him and I offer my deepest condolences to his family and friends. May he Rest In Peace.
Dr. Hanway and I worked together at Children's where we shared patients affected by autism. Long before that work started, he took care of my son Michael (pictured at age 5) who had fractured and shattered his elbow. Dr. Hanway came in to do the surgery on the 4th of July, 2003. He suggested that Michael's favorite stuffed animal come along and when Michael was wheeled out afterwards, the stuffed animal had the exact same dressing on his arm that Michael had on his. It was the perfect thing to do for a scared little boy. This picture was taken just after the pins were removed; the elbow healed perfectly. Michael is now a very physically active member of the Navy. Thank you Dr. Hanway. We will miss your presence but your kindness and extraordinary skill will continue to inspire us.
Dr. Hanway was my daughters Dr. He performed her back surgery for her scoliosis. He was a wonderful man and Dr. Shared his love of his children with us. We are so sorry for your loss.
Dr. Hanway, your death hurt me in the depths of my heart, I can not believe that such a generous human being is no longer with us. I thank God that he gave me the opportunity to express to you the good work that you did for my daughter Sophia as well as for our community. I will always remember you as a hero! Rest In Peace
In J.R.R. Tolkien's Return of the King, it is written: "the hands of the king are the hands of a healer." Boston, Houston Mifflin Company, (1991) at p. 894. If that is true, then the hands of my dear friend, Dr. Jeff Hanway revealed the king of man he was. Clearly his patients know this as evidenced by their posts. We know it too. The Hanways are family to us Vartains (He was the one guy I gave my okay for to Libby to marry). They were engaged on our our wedding day. I have known Lib since the first year of college. This picture at our home on January 6, 2018 shows his typical and wonderful smile. I now marvel at the crucifix in the background witnessing to Our Lord's protection over them and in whose hands, the true healer Jeff is now. All the good he did for his wife, children, parents, siblings, in-laws, patients, friends, fellow believers and citizens, I believe, will be within his vision and a part of his eternal reward. Godspeed my good friend. We love you and our prayers and thanks go with you. You are missed. Richard and Mary Vartain and family.
