Jeffrey's obituary
Jeffrey Caplan, 82, passed away on March 8, 2026, at Hillwood Senior Center in Bethesda, Maryland, after living with Alzheimer’s disease for several years.
Jeffrey was born on October 17, 1943, in Baltimore, Maryland to Harry & Tillie Caplan. He proudly served his country in the United States Air Force before continuing his education at the University of Maryland, where he earned both his undergraduate and graduate degrees. Jeffrey spent his career in Human Resources, working for the Department of Commerce, the Department of the Treasury, OPIC and FinCEN in senior level HR roles.
Jeffrey had a lifelong love of tennis and was a founding member of the Aspen Hill Racquet Club, where he played regularly for more than 40 years. The courts there were not only a place for competition but also friendship and community.
Known for his laid-back personality, Jeff had a kind heart and a quick sense of humor. He was especially famous among friends and family for his bad jokes, which he delivered with perfect timing and a smile. He enjoyed playing fun games like "Guess the Bill" at restaurants and if you guessed within a dollar, you received a dollar. Jeffrey was always available to lend a helping hand, even stopping frequently to help stranded motorists in need. Above all else, Jeff put family first. He maintained close ties with his Baltimore relatives and visited them often throughout his life. Marilyn Bart was an especially close relative, a consistent and special friend to Jeffrey through the years.
Jeffrey was married twice during his life. With his first wife, Margo Caplan (Astran), he had two children, Scott and Lisa. Lisa’s three children—Casey (22), Cadence (20), and Delaney (14)—brought him great pride and joy as his grandchildren.
Later in life, Jeffrey married Sharron Courlang. Through this marriage, he became a loving stepfather to Sharron’s two children, Brooke and Pam, and a proud grandfather to four more grandchildren. Brooke and her husband, Michael Mullican, have two children, Elizabeth (14) and Jackson (11). Pam and her husband, Evan Hoberman, have two daughters, Olivia (8) and Claire (5).
Jeffrey and Sharron loved spending time at their beach condo at Bethany Beach, DE, often also with his children and grandchildren.
Jeff will be remembered for his warmth, humor, devotion to family, and the many friendships he built over a lifetime.
His family is grateful for the care and compassion shown to him during his final years at Hillwood Senior Center in Bethesda, MD, as well as for his care at Brookdale Senior Center in Olney, MD.
He will be deeply missed by his wife Sharron, his children, grandchildren, extended family, and all who knew him.
A celebration of life will be held during the summer, time and place TBD.
