Jeanette's obituary

After a long and productive life, Jeanette Mary Mattson passed away quietly at home in Lafayette, surrounded by her family, on January 23rd, 2019. Born on May 21, 1932, she was the second of four daughters of Leo and Gertrude Mattson of Minneapolis, Minnesota. Nicknamed “Einstein” in high school and accepted into the Mathematics department of the University of Minnesota, Ms. Mattson chose instead to marry Thomas Podany, becoming Jeanette Podany, and focus on raising a family at which she was very successful - raising six children to productive adult lives. In 1965, Tom was transferred to the San Francisco Bay Area and the family moved to San Ramon having spent 2 years in Milwaukee in the interim. During this time she was very active in St. Raymond’s Parish as a lay minister and co-founded the swim team which has grown into the San Ramon Aquabears and is the namesake for the prestigious Schinnerer-Podany award. Once the family was launched and her divorce from Tom Podany in 1980, Jeanette returned to school and attained a Masters Degree in Counseling and her MFCC license. She worked as a private practice therapist and for Horizons Family Counseling through the Livermore Police Department until her retirement in 2002. Throughout this time she shared her life with her spouse, Thomas Resburg, her partner of over 30 years.

Jeanette Mattson will always be remembered as the loving matriarch of the Podany clan, and a generous sister and friend. She is survived by her sisters, Shirley Klukken of Minneapolis and Lois Jones of Atlanta, 5 of her children (and spouses), Terry Smith (Rob), Tom Podany (Michelle), Joe Podany (Karen), Mari Harrison (David) , and John Podany. Her youngest son, Paul Podany (Pam), preceded her in death. She also leaves a legacy of 8 grandchildren: Nathaniel (Shweta) and Brittany (Judy) Smith, Jason (fiance Priscilla) and Kyle (fiance Courney) Podany, Robin and Mike Podany, and Bailey and Blake Harrison, along with 2 great-granddaughters, Sierra Smith-Jarvis and Blakely Podany. She also leaves her long-time partner, Thomas Resburg.

A memorial celebration of her life will be held on Friday, February 22, 2019, at 2:00 pm, at the San Ramon Golf Course Wedgewood Banquet center in San Ramon. In lieu of flowers the family suggests a donation to The Alzheimer’s Research and Prevention Foundation.
