Jean's obituary
July 22, 1942 – April 29, 2025
Betty "Jean" Ratkovich, a beloved mother, grandmother, sister, and friend, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, April 29, 2025, in hospice care. Born in Chicago, IL on July 22, 1942, Jean lived a life filled with kindness, faith, and unwavering love for her family and community.
Jean was the proud mother of her children—Jeff (Cindy), Robyn, Bob, Bill (Shannon), and the cherished grandmother of 10 and 11 great grandchildren. She is also survived by her loving sisters, Nancy and Leanne. Jean held her role as a matriarch with great pride, offering warmth, wisdom, and encouragement to every generation of her growing family. She built strong individual relationships with each of her children and grandchildren, always making sure everyone felt seen, valued, and deeply loved.
Jean shared a home filled with love and care alongside her son, Bill, and daughter-in-law, Shannon, whose presence brought her daily joy and comfort.
Known for her caring spirit and devotion to helping others, Jean worked for many years volunteering and as a nanny, where she nurtured many children as if they were her own, becoming a “grandma” to countless families beyond her own. She also found joy in volunteering, baking, and lovingly handcrafting baby blankets for each of her grandchildren and great-grandchildren—a tradition that symbolized her nurturing heart.
Holidays were especially meaningful to Jean. Her family will fondly remember years of baking together at Thanksgiving, building gingerbread houses, and creating crafts that became treasured keepsakes—moments that reflected her love of togetherness and creativity.
Jean’s legacy is rooted in the family she helped grow and the love she gave freely to those around her. Before her illness, she was the glue that held her large and spirited family together, never missing a chance to celebrate life’s milestones or show up with her signature warmth.
She will be deeply missed and forever remembered.
