Jean's obituary
Jean Marie Lauretti, 71, of Bedford, NH, passed away on December 9, 2023 following decades of multiple sclerosis pain and symptom management, and most recently a crippling ALS diagnosis.
In the Spring of 2023, Jean was diagnosed with Bulbar ALS, a very rare and fast-progressing form of ALS. Jean braved all of her Bulbar ALS symptoms with little intervention, and it was her wish to not prolong the disease progression with anything, but her independence. Her legacy of resilience, kindness, grace, and unconditional love will continue to resonate in the hearts of those who knew and loved her.
Jean was born in Cambridge, MA to Robert Lauretti and Jeanne Freden. Jean grew up in Stoneham, MA with a brother and three sisters, and graduated from Stoneham High in 1970. Jean was very proud of Lauretti's Garden Floral, a business her parents ran for 25 years, an experience that left her with a love for roses. Jean married soon after high school and went on to have three sons - Michael, Dana, and Jason.
Jean was a diligent and dedicated worker, always committed to providing for herself. Jean owned a restaurant while raising her 3 children. She had a strong commitment to supporting people with substance abuse and mental/emotional health problems and spent a long time working at the Lake Shore Hospital in Manchester, NH, where she provided support and services for inpatients. She strived to earn a degree in social work and was just a few credits shy of a degree. Later, in 2001, Jean then went on to interview for her last employer, with Ann, one of her greatest friends, for a position at Elliot within the billing department. Ann remembers the beautiful blond, wearing a pretty smile and a lovely green dress that she interviewed, and said Jean always worked "110 MPH" once hired. Jean, the sole Medicare biller, was handling all of the VNA Homecare and Hospice billing right up until her last day - which, was not until late Fall of 2023. Jean made two incredible friends whom she loved so dearly while at the Elliot - Ann, and Marcia. Both of these women supported Jean through her final months, and Jean was so very grateful for them loving her as she was.
Jean was a woman who was as sweet as the treats she loved, particularly apple and mincemeat pies, Hostess cupcakes, and anything Little Debbie was cooking up. She was also fond of diet soda, a favorite indulgence (diet orange!). She had a penchant for suspense and mystery, which was reflected in both her choice of books, TV shows, and movies. Her recreational activities included spending quality time with her son Jason, sharing moments with her grandchildren, and hanging out with her fluffy white furever companion, Tweety.
She had a deep affection for animals and was unceasing in her efforts to support causes related to their wellbeing. However, her greatest accomplishments lay closer to home. Jean prided herself on raising her three sons as a single mother, buying her own home when she was in her 50s, and caring for her grandchildren — milestones that underscored her qualities of strength, love, and resilience.
Her devotion to her strong work ethic, her love for her grandchildren, her roaring laugh at Jason's "dad jokes," her Italian sausages and sauce, her unconditional love for Jenn, and her endless love for animals will always be treasured. The life lessons she imparted about giving grace and loving unconditionally will be her enduring gift to her family and friends.
Jean Lauretti's life was one filled with kindness, love, and grace. Her legacy will continue to inspire and her memory will forever be etched in the hearts of those she held dear. She will be deeply missed.
Jean is predeceased by both of her parents, her sister Nancy, and her brother Bobby.
Jean is survived by two sisters Maryann Nelson and Elaine (husband, Michael) Tosh, and her brother, Robert Stabins (wife, Joan), her sons Michael Marcolongo, Dana Marcolongo (wife, Kim), Jason Marcolongo (wife, Jennifer). Jean is also survived by her grandchildren - Jaden, Mya, Nicholas, Gia, and Bella.
A Celebration of Life will be hosted on January 20, 2024 at the Bedford Event Center, 379 S River Rd, Bedford, NH 03110, from 12:00 - 3:00 PM.
