Jean Bodurtha Guice

Let us remember with thanksgiving the life and ministry of Jean Elizabeth Bodurtha Guice, who passed away peacefully on March 21, 2025, at age 93 in Braintree, Massachusetts. She was the beloved wife of the late Rev. Richard Guice. A woman of quiet compassion and faith, she dedicated her life to her family, church community, and appreciation of the world around her.

Born on October 31, 1931, in Oxford, New York, to Jerre and Lucy Ingraham Bodurtha, Jean grew up with three siblings: Marie, Paul, and Fred.

At West Virginia Wesleyan College in Buckhannon, West Virginia, Jean majored in religious education and served as co-editor of the college newspaper during her senior year. She graduated on the morning of May 25, 1954, and married Richard Robert Guice at the First Methodist Church in town that afternoon.

The Guices began a life of frequent moves, starting with divinity school at Drew University and continuing through numerous parishes in the New York Conference including Roxbury & Halcottsville, Trinity & South Rondout in Kingston, Floral Park, Drew Church in Carmel, Peekskill, Pawling & Poughquag, Valhalla, and Westbury. Rev. Guice served several congregations after his retirement as well. Jean supported her husband's calling and played an active role in the church's mission locally and abroad. In her parish she organized and cooked for large events, comforted those in need, and taught Sunday school, touching many lives.

As a dedicated mother, Jean nurtured her children with love and a love of lifelong learning. Her grandchildren brought joy to her later years. She delighted in sharing stories, teaching them practical skills, and passing on her love of life. Jean's passions for trees, birds, reading, gardening, cooking, baking bread, travel, and music enriched her home and community. She had a gift for making everyone feel welcome and cared for through her hospitality, thoughtful conversations, and acts of kindness.

Jean Guice is survived by her children, Bryan, Jon, and Joy Guice; her grandchildren, Erik and Alexander Guice Hagström; and extended family members and many friends. She will be deeply missed by all who knew her.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to the Heifer Project in Jean's memory, reflecting her lifelong commitment to helping others.
