My sincere Condolences to the family for the passing of Mr. Baulu (that is how I have always addressed him).   Many years ago Mr and Mrs Baulu approached me to help them with the orchid collection at Wild Live Reserve, Barbados.  Mr. Baulu was very pleasant and easy to approach and spent happy hours discussing ways to progress with the project.

It was really sad to hear the news of his passing in Singapore, especially as I was in Spore at that time and still here…..so close and yet so far.

Beautiful memories of Mr. Baulu and the fun he had when the first batch of Iguanas were released in their allocated area at the Wild Life Reserve.  Also memories of his cheerful face at the wedding of their daughter Qui.

May he Rest In Peace and may God give Strength to Mrs. Baulu and the rest of the family.

Jean was an amazing talent and I have admired so much of him over the years. I have learnt so much from his love and respect for nature,  his keen eye and attention to detail and his love for people. Jean had a brilliant mind and may never be credited with some of his concepts.  The beautification and maintaining of the verges of our highways and the Duraplast project, just to name two. I know only too well the amount of work Jean put into that project. I can go on forever to talk about his witt, his humour, his generosity, his love for entertaining, .......but hey. 'There are Indians and there are Chief'. Until we meet again, sleep in peace Chief.

My family and I would always be grateful to Jean and his family for the kindness and generosity extended to us over the years. We would continue to keep you in our prayers . Yasmin, Jade and Emerald.

So saddened by the passing of Jean, my "uncle", my friend, my mentor.  He was incomparable, a man driven by his intellect and his passion for life.

As a child, I was inspired by his love of the natural world, challenged by his scientific curiosity, entertained by his talent for story-telling, and enthralled by his love for his family, friends and community.

From Jean, I learned that environmental conservation did not have to come at the expense of community development or economic prosperity.  (now commonly understood, but rather revolutionary back then!)

But, that was Jean - where others saw contradictions or roadblocks, he saw opportunity.  He had the mind of a scientist, the imagination of a dreamer, the spirit of an entrepreneur, and the soul of a Bon Vivant.

Jean was also a natural born trickster. Man could he be infuriating!  Never a dull moment, that is for sure.  But he was always there with an encouraging word,  terrible joke and/or thoughtful advice when needed.  I will carry his ready laugh and impish smile in my heart forever.

I like to think that Jean and my dad (John) are together now, sailing on the sea they both loved so much, getting into raucous debates  about the state of the world, spinning crazy yarns and watching over their families with pride.

Jean has left a lasting and meaningful professional legacy.  but more than that, he has touched the hearts and minds of countless friends, colleagues, competitors, and admirers across the world. I am eternally grateful to have been one of them.

To Suzanne, Kat, Cui, Boo and the rest of the family - I am so sorry for your loss.  Jean loved you all so very much.

I will raise a glass, and light a candle to his spirit.

and when I am done, the girls and I will have a little dance party in his name.

We have lost a very long-time friend. We will miss his incomparable energy and his ever bolder ideas. Jean left too quickly, too soon and too far, but life decided otherwise.

In addition to being a faithful friend, he was also, for us, a good science popularizer through his contextualizations, his fine analysis of these subjects and this, always in nuance. We will miss one of his favorite expressions during these exchanges with us, namely « Je ne veux pas être technique, but …»

He leaves behind his family and friends scattered around the world. We keep Jean an imperishable memory of his generosity and his loyalty.

Your forever friends Jacques and Lyne

I was so, so sad to hear of Jean’s sudden death. Both of us arriving in Barbados in 1979 to work with monkeys, it was inevitable that “de monkey man” and the “monkey girl” would cross paths early. Jean was the experienced primatologist and I was a freshly graduated ecologist who had never worked with monkeys before. His mentorship in those early years was invaluable, and for which I am forever grateful. He and I have since worked on monkey issues on and off for the past 40 years, and although we did not see each often in these later years, I greatly valued his friendship. I will never forget how he and Suzanne welcomed me into their home at Hillcrest. I spent many happy weekends there with Katherine and Cui Cui and usually several other guests (Isabelle had not yet made an appearance). I remember Suzanne preparing delicious meals in the small kitchen, with locally caught fish or crayfish, which Jean caught himself or sourced from the neighbourhood. He was so interesting to be around – someone who had been many places and done many things and could tell great stories about it over dinner, and your home was full of fascinating objects - furniture, sculptures, artwork. I will remember Jean as a dynamo who created a very full and rewarding life for himself and his family, and for his many contributions to the sustainable development of Barbados. He was doing what he wanted to do to the end.  Sending you all my love and thoughts at this very sad time. Rest in peace, Jean.

A larger than life individual who embraced all aspects of life with such passion and enthusiasm. I have known Jean for half my life and was entertained by his quick wit and love for life. I still haven’t grasped the fact that he is now on another journey but time i am told is a big helper. I am feeling  for Suzanne and all the family. May he continue to influence all that comes his way in the next world . Rest now Jean. God Speed.

I have know Jean from the early 1980's.  You always believe that you know 'most things' about a person but that could never be applied to Jean.

It was only through reading his Obituary that you have to be in awe of this giant of a man. I have had many many conversations with this serious but witty guy and he has never shed light on his vast knowledge.  Jean has lived his life to the fullest but I am sure that he still had more that he would have liked to accomplish .  Jean was larger than life itself and I do believe that people did not give him the credit that was due.

It has been a privilege knowing Jean and especially remembering him as family.

My sincere condolences to his beautiful family.  Keep Jean in your hearts and talk to him when you are having a hard day. Jean loved his Suzanne and his special girls, he will always be there for you. ❤️

Some of my earliest and happiest memories were spent running around the Baulu house near Bathsheba with occasional jaunts up to Andromeda Gardens. It was like being in a nature documentary. I was just a little kid but I recall Jean being very generous and kind with his time and knowledge. It's been almost 40 years since I was there but most of my close friends know about "De Monkey Man" in Barbados because those few years had such a lasting impact. I don't know if Katherine or Cui-Cui remember me but you were some of the very first friends I had, being as little as I was back then...and I'd like to offer my deep condolences to you both, and the rest of your family. Your father was a very special man.

Jean was an amazing guy. Super intelligent, fun, curious and tireless to learn and improve the state of nature, climate and people.  Him and  his whole family welcomed me into their home and their lives decades ago, and I loved them all like my family. My heart goes out to Suzanne, Katherine, Qui, Isabelle and all the extended family. Jean( Dad, granddad, husband, friend) will always be alive in spirit and in our memories. Stay strong you guys and have a laugh as Jean would always want you to XXXX
