So saddened by the passing of Jean, my "uncle", my friend, my mentor. He was incomparable, a man driven by his intellect and his passion for life.
As a child, I was inspired by his love of the natural world, challenged by his scientific curiosity, entertained by his talent for story-telling, and enthralled by his love for his family, friends and community.
From Jean, I learned that environmental conservation did not have to come at the expense of community development or economic prosperity. (now commonly understood, but rather revolutionary back then!)
But, that was Jean - where others saw contradictions or roadblocks, he saw opportunity. He had the mind of a scientist, the imagination of a dreamer, the spirit of an entrepreneur, and the soul of a Bon Vivant.
Jean was also a natural born trickster. Man could he be infuriating! Never a dull moment, that is for sure. But he was always there with an encouraging word, terrible joke and/or thoughtful advice when needed. I will carry his ready laugh and impish smile in my heart forever.
I like to think that Jean and my dad (John) are together now, sailing on the sea they both loved so much, getting into raucous debates about the state of the world, spinning crazy yarns and watching over their families with pride.
Jean has left a lasting and meaningful professional legacy. but more than that, he has touched the hearts and minds of countless friends, colleagues, competitors, and admirers across the world. I am eternally grateful to have been one of them.
To Suzanne, Kat, Cui, Boo and the rest of the family - I am so sorry for your loss. Jean loved you all so very much.
I will raise a glass, and light a candle to his spirit.
and when I am done, the girls and I will have a little dance party in his name.
