I met Jay playing football my sophomore year at KR. Got to be friends because of football and of course after school activities. I never seen him get mad, and always treated everyone with respect. Had a good laugh to go with his sense of humor. The class of 78 will miss him dearly when we all will gather. Because of the type of person he was, he will be remembered as one of the good people of the class of 78 and more.

I just learned of Jay's passing. I am very sorry to learn of his passing. We both went to Park Orchard elementary. My Mom use to watch he & Lance until their Mom got off of work @ Boeing. I remember Jay to be shy, quiet & a nice guy. Rest in peace Jay. 🙏

I have so many great memories with Jay, going back to 7th grade at Meridian Junior High on the football team together. We remained friends through High School and after Jay started working at Boeing and I was going to Green River, we'd still get together most every weekend. One Saturday night, we were all in a good mood and having a good time. Jay loved his Tequila Sunrise's and put his glass on the TV. I believe he challenged me to hit it with a cork coaster I had on the opposite side of the apartment on his kitchen table. Well, of course, I nailed in one try, dumped his Tequila Sunrise on the top of his TV and fried the circuits. I felt terrible about that. I was going to school and didn't have much money at the time. Jay fixed it and never asked for a penny from me which I still remember and regret to this day. Jay gave me the nickname "Screendoor man" after I walked through the screen door to his balcony one day. We were listening to the Doors a lot and "Backdoor Man" was a favorite of ours. I remember when Jay bought his dark green Datsun 280Z. A year or so later, I had to have one too and bought a copper colored one. Sometimes he'd come over to my house and we'd wash our cars in the back yard. We had so much fun cruising around in those cars. We also went bass fishing, shooting, going to parties, Garrison Creek Park to play basketball. When Jay and his cousin John lived together in Kent, their apartment was the go to place for all of us every week end. Jay was always such a relaxed, happy, likable guy, he had all the friends over all of the time and I think it drove John nuts. Jay used to like to crank up the Beatles' song "Birthday" on his birthday or anyone else's, for that matter. I remember one night we were at Lance's house when they were still living together. It was Jay's birthday and sure enough, he turned on "Birthday" and cranked that sucker up loud. Lance came running out of his bedroom with a revolver in his hand and yelled at us to get out of the "f......" house, which we did quite expeditiously. Lance was really pissed and waving that revolver around, scared us both pretty good. Lance had to get up in the morning early and I think Jay was working second shift at the time. I was in College so cutting a morning class on birthday night was a given for me. Everyone liked Jaybird. I remember in the summer, going out to Lake Wilderness. Jay and I could throw a frisbee farther than anyone at the Park. We'd pitch our towels, grab something cold to drink and get on opposite sides of the park and just throw that frisbee over the top of everyone at the beach who was playing catch or throwing a frisbee too. We'd just laugh and sail that thing over all of them and catch a lot of sun. We lost track of each other over the years and went our separate ways but I'll always remember Jay as a great friend, a relaxed, happy, likable guy who made friends easily and was liked by everyone who knew him, including my entire family. I miss our happy times together very much.
