Jay's obituary

Jay Jerome Haaven, 64, of Lake Stevens, WA; Minnetonka, MN; and Phoenix, AZ, departed this world on October 23, 2023, following a courageous battle with Stage 4 Renal Cell Carcinoma. Jay faced his diagnosis with unwavering determination, expecting more hiking adventures alongside his faithful four-legged companion, Heidi.

Born on August 4, 1959, in Minneapolis, MN, Jay's life was a tapestry of rich experiences, each woven with enthusiasm and purpose. An alumnus of Mound-Westonka High School, Class of 1978, in MN, he continued his family's legacy of military service, enlisting in the Navy from 1981 to 1984. His love for the great outdoors and hiking left an indelible mark on those who knew him, evident in the "Take a Hike" tattoo he proudly bore on his wrist.

Jay's artistic gifts are a profound part of his legacy. He discovered immense joy in passing on his skills to his great-niece, Kenadie, who he credits for reviving his passion to paint. His mischievous sense of humor will echo through generations as the stories of his practical jokes are retold.

Jay also took enormous pleasure in selecting the perfect gifts for special occasions for his son; and earned him the cherished title of "Funcle" from his great-nieces and great-nephews.

Jay is survived by his devoted son, Jessy Haaven of Gilbert, AZ, and his loyal canine companion, Heidi. He is also fondly remembered by his sister and best friend, Jerri Haaven of Lake Stevens, WA, and his brother, Jon Haaven of Tybee Island, GA. His nephews, Noah (Shawna) Pester of Lake Stevens, WA and Josh (Leslie) Pester of Parrish, FL, treasured their uncle. Shawna and Leslie held a special place in his heart, just as his great-nephews and nieces, Treyten, Kenadie, Maxen, Caleb, Sienna, and Maddox, did. Jay also leaves behind several cousins and special friends who loved him.

Jay is preceded in death by his parents, Kent Haaven and Marilyn Goodwin. Per his wishes, no formal services are scheduled. His final resting place will be the Grand Army Republic (GAR) cemetery in Snohomish, WA, next to his beloved mom. May Jay find eternal peace in the embrace of the earth he loved so dearly. Arrangements by Funeral Alternatives of Snohomish County, Marysville, WA.
