I never met Jay in person, since I live on the West Coast, but I was a regular in her online standards class. She was a wonderful teacher, combining great warmth and encouragement with spot on suggestions for improvement. She was generous about sharing from her life and her thoughts. I came to love her from these weekly encounters, and always hoped that I would have a chance to be with her in person. Sadly, that will not happen in this lifetime. I have felt privileged to share in her final journey, and I’m so grateful to those members of her family and friends that have surrounded her with so much care and love. I am happy that so much of her remains through her recordings and her book, as well as the memories of her family, friends, and students.

I don't have words in this time for what's happened.  My feelings and connection with Jay have always been so real.  She's always felt like a sister to me.  I love Jay.  I love her point of view.  I think everyone was touched and healed by her perspective, and her love.  I feel her with me, like I always have.  I grew to know her daughter a bit, and she is a blessing, and an outpouring of love... Jay is joy.  Jay is truth.  Jay is love.  Jay is jazz.  You're in my universe always, my sister.

Sending loads of love and light during this sorrowful time. Mama Jay was such a beacon of love, acceptance, talent, and comedy. I was blessed to have the joy of knowing her—all my love to you, Dear Dejha, family, and friends of Jay.
