My cousin Mike Nock was visiting NY and took me recently arrived from New Zealand to hear music at Kansas City club. There in the dark I fell into the laps of Jay and Frank Clayton! We all lived in Soho .. and I became firm friends of the family ..

I never met Jay in person, but I studied with her online for several years. I first met her in an online workshop on free singing, which I took through the Jazzschool in Berkeley. She told us about her weekly zoom classes on jazz standards and free singing, and I started attending regularly. I learned so much in her jazz standards class, both directly from her feedback to me and from her work with the other students. I loved her warm personality, her humor, and her way of giving feedback in a loving and positive way. I enjoyed participating in her zoom concerts. Once this site started, I was happy to see the names of a couple of the people I got to know through her classes who lived close enough to visit her in person and help with her care. I always hoped I would have a chance to come east and meet Jay in person, but of course, that is not to be.

I first saw Jay sing with Quartett at the Kool Jazz Festival near Seattle in 1982. I was twelve years old. My older brother was fifteen and he bought the tickets. We were there to hear Maynard Ferguson! Quartett came on early in the day. We listened attentively to the new music. Interesting. I heard Quartett again at the Bellevue Jazz Festival two years later. Jay sang with Don Lanphere and would sit in with Bobby McFerrin. I still remember her first words to me when I started studying at the Cornish College. I was sitting in a desk chair in the hallway. Jay walks towards us with her hands full. She had a cup of soup. I offered her the desk chair. She says, let me sit there, I'm older than you.
