Jason's obituary

Jason Roberts, a dedicated attorney for the U.S. Department of State, passed away on June 5, 2024, at the age of 58. Jason’s unwavering commitment to justice and his passion for serving his country left an indelible mark on all who knew him.

Born on January 15, 1966, in Columbus, Ohio, Jason was the son of Mark and Linda Roberts. He grew up with a deep sense of curiosity and a love for learning, which eventually led him to pursue a career in law. After graduating from Ohio State University with a degree in Political Science, Jason attended Georgetown University Law Center, where he earned his Juris Doctorate.

Jason’s career with the U.S. Department of State began in 2004. Over the past two decades, he distinguished himself as an expert in international law and diplomacy, often working on high-profile cases that shaped U.S. foreign policy. His colleagues remember him as a brilliant legal mind and a tireless advocate for justice, whose work ethic and integrity were unmatched.

Beyond his professional achievements, Jason was a devoted family man. He married his college sweetheart, Emily Roberts (née Thompson), in 2001. Together, they raised three wonderful children: Sarah, 18; David, 15; and Michael, 12. Jason was a loving husband and father who always made time for his family despite his demanding career. Whether coaching David’s soccer team or attending Sarah’s school plays, Jason’s presence was a constant source of support and encouragement.

In his spare time, Jason enjoyed reading historical novels, hiking with his family, and playing the guitar. He was also an avid sports fan, often seen cheering for his beloved Ohio State Buckeyes and the Cleveland Browns. His friends and family will remember his infectious laugh, his thoughtful nature, and his ability to find joy in the simplest of moments.

Jason’s commitment to his community was evident through his volunteer work with local charities and his mentorship of young attorneys. He believed in giving back and often spoke of the importance of service to others.

Jason is survived by his wife Emily, his children Sarah, David, and Michael, his parents Mark and Linda Roberts, and his sister, Jennifer Miller. He will be deeply missed by his extended family, friends, colleagues, and all who had the privilege of knowing him.

A memorial service will be held on June 12, 2024, at 2:00 PM at the First United Methodist Church in Columbus, Ohio. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to the American Civil Liberties Union, an organization Jason passionately supported.

Jason Roberts lived a life of purpose and integrity. His legacy will continue to inspire those who knew him and those who will learn of his contributions in the years to come. May he rest in peace.
