Jason Scott Hower, affectionately known as a “Gentle Giant” to his family and friends, passed away unexpectedly on July 9, 2024, in Sacramento, California. Jason left a legacy of integrity, kindness, and a life rich in accomplishments and relationships.
Born in Fort Wayne, Indiana, on December 21, 1972, Jason was raised by his parents, Steven and Lynn Hower, as the eldest sibling to Josh, Briana, and Kinsi. As a child, he developed a deep love for the outdoors, embarking on countless adventures that fueled his lifelong passion for the environment. Known for his generous spirit, Jason was always willing to share his time and kindness, leaving an indelible mark on those who knew him.
After graduating from Northrop High School in Fort Wayne, Jason pursued higher education at Purdue University in Fort Wayne, excelling in biomedical sciences. These academic achievements marked the beginning of a career dedicated to excellence and impact.
Jason's professional journey began in 1996 with the American Red Cross Tissue Services, where his skills and passion shone. He advanced to the role of Director of Operations for the American Red Cross in Costa Mesa, where he played a vital role in mending community relationships and enhancing lives through organ and tissue donation. His work left a lasting imprint on the healthcare community.
His community service, especially his over 30 years in the organ transplant community with organizations like American Red Cross, OneLegacy, Donor Network West, and Sierra Donor Services, showcased his altruistic nature. Jason's life was one of giving—time, knowledge, humor, and love.
In 1996, Jason met the love of his life, Jennifer, while working for the American Red Cross Tissue Services. Their friendship blossomed into a deep connection, and they married on Thanksgiving morning in 1999. Together, they built a loving home and were blessed with two fantastic children, Jasmine and Jace. Jason cherished his role as a family man, encouraging his kids to be proud of who they are.
An avid outdoor enthusiast, Jason loved hiking and river rafting with his family. His presence at family gatherings was marked by his dimpled smile, adventurous tales, and infectious laughter. For the last 13 years, he resided in Shingletown, California, where he was respected in various healthcare communities, especially the Northern state critical care sector. Known for his generous spirit and humor, he mentored many and strove to make the world a better place.
Jason was predeceased by his father, Steven Hower (2016), and his nephew, Jasper Anderson (2016). His memory will be cherished by his loving wife Jennifer, children Jasmine and Jace, mother Lynn Hower, brother Josh (Carrie) Hower, sisters Briana (Joe) Anderson and Kinsi (Jeff) Shriner, and a close-knit family of aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, cousins, and in-laws. His absence will also be profoundly felt by a community of friends and colleagues who admired and respected him.
Though Jason's life may seem too short, those blessed to know him understand that his existence and impact transcend time. He will be remembered for the heart he shared with his friends and family, truly loving each of them.
Rest in Power, Jason. You were a tireless advocate for organ donation, an amazing husband, a beloved father, a supportive brother and son, devoted uncle, and a true mentor, friend, and colleague. You will be forever loved and missed.
