I am an Ombuds colleague of Jared’s and I extend my heartfelt condolences to the Lee family and his dear friends. This week I was on a phone call with a colleague sharing our sadness and grieving Jared’s loss when I looked out the window and watched an eagle soar past over the Hudson River in New York (a rare and thrilling sight). Jared was a treasured and valued colleague and volunteer with the California Caucus of College and University Ombuds. Among his many attributes Jared’s easy confidence, professionalism and kindness made him stand out. He joined our Planning Committee as a volunteer and never said no, was always ready to step in and did so with a smile. His physical absence will be felt, acknowledged and honored at our annual conference in November. As I read more about Jared’s life and family, about his dedication to volunteering and sharing his gifts with all of his communities, his exceptionalism comes into even greater focus. And as I learn about his deep faith I’m comforted in the knowledge that although he’s not with us anymore, he is safe and is at home.

“But those who hope in the Lord  will renew their strength.  They will soar on wings like eagles;  they will run and not grow weary,  they will walk and not be faint.” Isaiah 40:31. May Jared rest in peace and may perpetual light shine upon him. ❤️

Jared was an incredible human. His smile was kind and infectious. He was sweet, polite, funny. My memory among others is how much he helped me at camp his last year as a camper. He could have been doing so many other things and yet, he made sure to ask what he could do for me. This is so indicative of who he was at his core, he was a servant. He served others in order to show his love for our Lord and I find a smile comes to my face when I think of the joy of the reward he is experiencing now in the presence of our King. We grieve with you, Lee family, we love you. We look forward to the great reunion when all of us are at home with Jesus .

I was so proud of him and the rest of our trek that day. Our schedule was fully booked for every day. Each day required hiking to the next overnight camp. We had been scheduled to climb Baldy the day before, on July 15 -- up and down was supposed to take all our effort for that day. We went to bed early the night before; everyone had been nervous since even before they got to Philmont that they might not be strong enough for the climb and might not succeed. That night (end of July 14) the valley was hit by a major storm and flash floods. Streams literally flowed through each tent. The temperature dropped and it became bitterly cold. Nonetheless, the scouts all woke themselves at 0400 and packed up for the attempted ascent. At the foot of Baldy we were turned back because conditions were unsafe. Heading back to camp we learned that the other group from Troop 60 was in serious trouble. Some of the scouts were suffering from severe hypothermia. And the others were cold, wet and hungry. Our scouts hurried to their camp to help them, got the other scouts into our warm clothing and sleeping bags, took their wet clothing and sleeping bags (which weighed a ton from the water) down to a base camp that had a clothes dryer. Then they dried all the clothing and equipment and took it back to the others' camp. While the clothes were drying, some of our scouts made hot chocolate for the other frozen scouts. Our scouts were truly heroic and selfless in their efforts to help the others. They knew what had to be done and they did it without needing any direction. Professionals could not have done it any better

We were scheduled to hike to a different overnight camp the next day (June 16). We had missed our opportunity to test ourselves on Mt Baldy. But at dinner in camp that evening one of the scouts said "Why don't we climb Mt Baldy in the morning and then hike to the new camp -- do two days of hiking in one day?" The other scouts all immediately joined in. I was shocked and pleased. They had progressed from doubting that they could climb Mt Baldy at all, to wanting to climb Baldy as a before breakfast warm-up, before a day-long backpacking trek. At 0400 on July 16, these scouts packed up in the dark and the cold and headed up Mt Baldy. Later that day they made it on schedule to their next destination. And they asked to do it. It was their idea. They had been through the same storm as the others. They too, were cold, wet, tired and hungry. But they wanted the challenge. They hated the thought of backing down from the challenge. They knew they were capable of so much more than they could imagine.

I have never been happier and more proud of any scouts than what these young men showed me in dealing with that adversity. The adult leaders' goals was to get the scouts to feel confident when they were out of their comfort zone. These scouts blew that goal apart.

Jared was so kind, so thoughtful and caring, with a boundless energy that he shared gladly. I couldn't have a bad day when I was around Jared. There was too much to see and explore in the wonder of nature, too much to hear about all his activities, to ever stay bogged down with whatever mundane troubles I had. I loved when the whole family could be together (I'm his aunt)--the Lees are an incredible family, every one of them.

To see all of your stories of how deeply Jared touched you is astonishing. I found Jared remarkable for what he gave to all of us in the family, but to see that he could share himself similarly in his professional life as well is even more amazing. How does one person have so much inside of them to give?

Along with all of you I am heartbroken. My heart aches for all of us in his family and for all his friends and colleagues. We miss you and love you Jared!
