Janis's obituary
Janis Lee Stephens, 87, of Burney, CA, passed away peacefully on April 4th, 2023 after a short stay at Mayers Memorial Hospital in Fall River Mills, CA. Janis had been a resident of the long term care facility there since late 2022.
Janis was born in 1936 in Westwood, CA and was raised in Northern California. After Janis graduated from Eureka High School in Eureka, CA, she went on to marry Herold Stephens, Jr. They had two beautiful children, Nadine and Herold or “Pete” or “Harry” as some called him. She was a wonderful mother to both of her children and grandchildren.
Janis was a very hard-working woman and kept up with the men while working at Louisiana Pacific Mill. She later transferred to Sonora, CA when the mill closed in Burney. In 1992 Janis retired from the mill and moved to Reno, NV. In 1995, she moved back to Burney where most of her friends and family were located. She spent her free time quilting, gardening, playing bunco and hanging out with the gals in the Red Hat Society. She also loved classes at the pool and gym. She was greatly involved with the VFW along with her husband in her younger years. Janis was a great cook and she often helped cook at the VFW events and sometimes you could even find her helping behind the bar.
Janis was predeceased in death by her husband of 43 years, Herold Stephens, Jr., her son, “Pete”, her daughter Nadine, and her great grandson Jaycob Whinery who was the apple of her eye. She is survived by her granddaughter Sheri Whinery (Pat) and great-grandson, Justyn; great-great grandson, Elyas Keith, granddaughter Charline (Christopher) Gonzalez and great-grandchildren, Maci, Grason, Carl and Marvel and her mother-in-law Joyce Stephens. Janis spent the last twenty years of her life with her close companion Glenn Grey. Janis was very well loved and had so many friends that enjoyed her spunky personality. She brought many people laughter, including the nurses at the hospital.
A celebration of life will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to the Burney VFW.
