Janice's obituary
Janice A. Vismale was a beloved daughter, sister, aunt, and godmother, passed away peacefully on October 15th, 2025, at the age of 70. Born on January 15, 1955, during a winter storm in Staten Island, New York, Janice often shared with pride that she shared her birthday with Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.,a reflection of her lifelong belief in faith, perseverance, and service to others.
She was the cherished daughter of Gloria and Albert Vismale and devoted sister of Karen Vismale, all of whom preceded her in death. Raised in Queens, Janice’s early years were marked by both challenge and curiosity. Though asthma often kept her home, it sparked a love of books and learning that would guide her throughout her life.
A graduate of*Bryant High School, Janice pursued higher education at West Virginia State College and later Queens College. After caring for her sister following their mother’s passing, Janice built a remarkable professional career: first with the New York City Department of Education then Union Paper Camp, and later Depository Trust and Clearance Corporation, where she worked over 15 years. As one of the few women, and often the only Black woman, in her department’s overnight computer operations, she earned respect for her confidence, diligence, and mastery of technology.
In 2015, she achieved a lifelong goal by earning her Associate Degree in Graphic Design from the Art Institute, proving that it’s never too late to follow your dreams.
Janice’s life was grounded in faith, family, and service. She was baptized on May 15, 1955, and confirmed in her faith on May 14, 1967 — milestones that marked the beginning of a lifelong walk with God. A devoted member of Transfiguration Lutheran Church, later Christ Church, she served faithfully as a council member, property manager, choir singer, and liaison to the pastors. Her works reflected her favorite biblical story, that of “Doubting Thomas,” a reminder that faith is often found through persistence, love, and service.
Known affectionately as Auntie, Janice was a godmother to 11 godchildren , each of whom she cherished deeply. She was also known for her creativity, her crocheted baby blankets, her joyful laughter, and her unwavering care for those she loved.
Janice is survived by her godchildren, nieces, nephews, extended family, and a host of loving friends, church members, and neighbors whose lives she touched with kindness and grace.
Janice will be cremated, and her family takes comfort in knowing her spirit lives on in the many lives she touched with her love, laughter, and faith.
In lieu of flowers, the family invites donations in Janice’s memory to causes that reflect her generous heart :
Wave Hill, a Bronx garden she cherished for its peace and beauty; local hunger relief programs such as World Central Kitchen or No Kid Hungry: honoring her years of serving meals to the homeless during Thanksgiving; or Christ Church, where she faithfully served her congregation.
Each gift celebrates her legacy of faith, compassion, and community, a life lived with purpose, service, and love.
