Janice's obituary

Janice Carol Hanson Aragon, 86, went to be with her Lord on February 15, 2021. After a battle with dementia and health issues complicated by COVID, she died peacefully in hospice care. She was a native of New Orleans, Louisiana. She finished her high school career at a boarding school at Gulf Park in Long Beach, Mississippi where she graduated in 1952 as valedictorian of her class. She graduated with a degree in social work in 1956 from Centenary College in Shreveport, Louisiana. She married the Reverend F.J. Aragon in 1956 and they relocated to Cypress, Texas. Together they served the congregation of Christ United Church of Cypress until 1994 when F.J. died. She is mother of Fidel John Aragon III, and his wife, Maureen, and Brian Keith Aragon and his wife, Mary; proud grandmother of Christopher Aragon and his wife Lauren, Kaitlyn Aragon Brooks and her husband, Ryan, and other grandchildren Cassidy, Cameron, and Noah Aragon. She is predeceased by her parents, Alfred F. and Jennie S. Hanson, and brother and sister-in-law, Myron William “Bill” and Joycelyn Hanson. She is survived by her beloved significant other, Calvin Douglas Weiman. For her career she faithfully served as a teacher, administrator, and mentor in the Cypress Fairbanks School District for 35 years. She began her teaching career in 1963 and retired in 1996. It is notable she was the first female principal in the district. The school district honored her tenure with a school namesake, Janice Hanson Aragon Middle School located in Cypress, Texas in 2001, an achievement she had enormous pride in. In retirement, she resumed working for Stephen F. Austin University and Sam Houston State University as a supervisor and mentor to student teachers. She was a Past President of Texas Association of Secondary School Principals. She was an active volunteer with Houston Hospice and many other charitable organizations. Kind, generous, loving, always seeking the good in others, she was a beloved individual who leaves a lasting legacy in her community.

Memorial service will be held on Saturday, February 27, at 1pm at Houston Northwest Church located at 19911 TX-249, Houston 77070. The family is not using a funeral home. Therefore, flowers may be sent to the church only on the morning of the service. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorials to Mrs. Aragon’s home congregation, Christ United Church of Cypress, specifically to Children’s Ministry, 14207 Telge Rd, Cypress 77429; or Houston Hospice, 1905 Holcombe Blvd, Houston, TX 77030.
