Janet's obituary

Olinger, Janet E. (nee Fredrickson), age 84 of Victoria. Survived by husband of 63 years, Ralph; children, Joy Kempenich (Leo), Chet Olinger (Nancy Hudgins), Lee Ann Singleton (Jon); grandchildren Nick (fiancee Stephanie Eigenfeld) and Nathan Kempenich, Lily Singleton; brother, Ted Fredrickson (Diane).

There will be a memorial service 11:00 AM Saturday, June 29th at Highview Christiana Lutheran Church, 26690 Highview Avenue, Farmington, MN 55024, with a visitation one hour before the service. Janet was baptized, confirmed, and married at Highview.

After graduating in 1953 from Northfield High School, Janet continued her education at the Hamline School of Nursing, graduating as a Registered Nurse in 1956. She kept her license current past her 80th birthday. She worked in Intensive Care for many years; and during the last 20 years she had her own business doing electrolysis. She loved welcoming customers into her home, and many became good friends.

A love of baseball was instilled in her when she was young, keeping score as her father coached and as her brother, husband, or son or daughters played. Easy to hear from the stands, and wasn’t afraid to correct the umpires when needed.
Janet was a lifelong learner; she loved to travel and read. When she’d come back from a trip, she spent many hours “writing up the trip” so she could relive it later.

Her books were often marked up with her favorite quotes and passages annotated in the margins. This one was marked:

“We read books to find out who we are. What other people , real or imaginary, do and think and feel is an essential guide to our understanding of what we ourselves are and may become.”-Ursula K. LeGuin

Her love of learning didn’t stop at death; she has donated her body for research to the University of Minnesota through the Anatomy Bequest Program. She strongly encouraged others to do the same.

Memorials preferred to SVABW, PO Box 166, Belle Plaine, MN 56011. (SVABW.org)
