Personal note from Janet's daughter, Kara

Thank you all for the many kind words, emails, phone calls, texts, and support since our mother's death. She died with, not of, COVID-19; however, she did not die alone. I am forever grateful that I was allowed to accompany her during her final days, which were comfortable and peaceful. We remember her as the vibrant, humble, intelligent woman we knew before the onset of Alzheimer's, from which mercifully she is no longer suffering. As one of her friends wrote to me in an email: "Her life was a gift to us all." Truly.

Thank you to the staff of Kirkwood Corners in Lee, New Hampshire, for loving and caring for Janet in the face of such extraordinary circumstances. An obituary will be published in the coming days in the Keene, NH Sentinel.

Update from April 19, 2021

Hello all,

This weekend was a bittersweet one as we moved Janet’s possessions from Kirkwood Corners to my house for storage. Kirkwood kindly packed her belongings and George from Facilities brought them all downstairs for us, making the process simple and safe for all as we did not need to go inside. (As an extra layer of precaution, however, we purposefully waited until we were all fully vaccinated before coming up.)

It was an emotional day, made easier by lots of support from dear friends Shawn and Jessica, and help packing up the uHaul from Janet’s son Markie and his wife Kim.

The most meaningful part of the day was the presentation of the check for the Janet Horton Memorial Ice Cream Fund, made possible by your incredible generosity! Activities Director Jayme Thibeau (Janet’s special buddy and fellow ice cream fanatic at Kirkwood) accepted the $2,000 check and a memorial plaque I had made - see pictures. Jayme will place the plaque so everyone can see Janet’s smiling face and think of her as they come and go from their field trips for ice cream, which can now resume post-vaccinations. Jayme is in charge of planning all field trips and activities, and is already looking forward to planning the ice cream outings for the residents. Just in time for Spring, although we had just gotten a surprise New Hampshire snowstorm the day before!

Rachelle, Head Nurse at Kirkwood who took loving care of Janet, particularly at the end of her life after Janet contracted COVID, talked about how deeply she is missed and the void her death has left in the community. Rachelle is thrilled, however, knowing how much joy the Ice Cream Fund will bring to the Kirkwood residents in Janet’s memory.

An immensely sad task was made brighter by the hint of Spring in the air, and the ability to reminisce about Janet together, knowing that her spirit will live on through happy activities for the Kirkwood residents for a long time to come - thanks to the Memorial Ice Cream Fund! My heartfelt gratitude goes out to all who donated so generously to this very special cause.

Update from Jan. 29, 2021

Hello all,

Janet's graveside memorial service will be held Saturday, June 5th, 2021, in Woodstock, NH. All are welcome to attend. I am hopeful to arrange Internet viewing of the service so that Janet's family and friends who are unable to attend in person can be present. Further details to come closer to the date.

I am working with Merrill Gardens, the parent organization of Kirkwood Corners, to arrange the details and transfer of the Ice Cream Fund. More details to come later in the spring.

Thank you all,

Kara
