Janet Denise (Lay) Mendenhall, 67, of Fenton, Missouri, passed away peacefully with her family by her side on Monday, February 6, 2023.

She was born November 3, 1955 in St. Louis, Missouri, daughter of the late Billy and Mary (Cole) Lay.

Janet attended Hillsboro High School and Jefferson College in Hillsboro, Missouri where she earned an Associate Degree in HVAC science.  After an array of career fields, Janet retired in 2013 and pursued her hobbies of crafting, quilting, cooking and spending time with her children and many grandchildren.  

Janet is survived by her five children, Gregory Gossett of House Springs, Dede Gossett of Barnhart, Jessica (Austin Anderson) Gossett of Maplewood, Heather (Martin) Morgan of Fenton and Tammy Gossett of Potosi; three stepchildren Genera Hodges of Fenton, Veronica (Hannah) Hawk of Hillsboro and Larry Mendenhall of Farmington; twenty grandchildren and twenty great-grandchildren.  She is also survived by two sisters Pamela (Dennis) Caine of Hillsboro, Laura (Dan) Otten of Arnold, and one brother Alan Lay of Desoto along with countless other family and dear friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Billy and Mary (Cole) Lay; her loving husband Larry Mendenhall; and three siblings, Deborah Lay, Annette Lay, and Stanley (Sally) Lay.  

Janet was known to handle life's challenges on her own terms and in her own way.  As such, her family is honoring her final wishes to not have a formal funeral.   A celebration of her life and legacy will be planned for late spring 2023.

A special thank you is extended to the staff of BJC hospice for allowing Janet to leave this world with all the dignity and poise that she carried throughout her life.
