James (Jim) Long passed away peacefully on January 17, 2024 at UK’s Chandler Hospital. As in life by his side was his loving wife, Virginia and constant companion, his beloved dog, Daisy. Jim was 95.
A retired, decorated Colonel of the United States Air Force, Jim served his country for over 25 years, completing 150 missions as a combat pilot flying reconnaissance aircrafts with over 7,000 flying hours. He was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross Medal of Honor. Following his service, Jim continued to spend time in the skies while earning his private pilots license. He later began building Giant Scale RC airplanes to continue his craft, just with his feet on the ground.
Jim had many passions and successes in life in and out of the Air Force. He started the football program and coached at Bedford County High School and was an Assistant Coach at The University of Louisville. After retirement, he enjoyed farming hay, raising horses and cattle including his prized Black Angus bull. Jim loved history, sports, games and spending time with his family.
Colonel to some, Coach to others, Friend to many, Jim was admired and respected by all who met him. He is continued to be loved by an adoring family; survived by his wife of 29 years, Virginia Long; children, Beverly (Clay) Miller, Renee (Brian) Combs, David (Jenna) Tolliver; grandchildren, Mallory, Chelsea (Andy), Dylan, Madi; and one great grandchild, Drew.
