James's Obituary
James Dietz, a well-respected social scientist who worked for the National Science Foundation, died of a heart attack, while vacationing in Cancun, Mexico, on August 15, 2023, at the age of 56. He was an avid traveler and a trusted mentor to many members of Alcoholics Anonymous.
James (known as “Jim” by his family) was born in Smithtown, NY, on August 23, 1966. He graduated from SUNY Albany University with a degree in political science in 1988. He then went on to earn a Master's degree from Syracuse University and a Ph.D. in public policy from Georgia Tech University in 2004.
In his career at NSF, James worked to enhance policy to bolster Science/STEM education for girls and minority groups. James published numerous articles and papers on U.S. science education policy.
James was also a passionate advocate for people in recovery. He was a member of Alcoholics Anonymous for over 20 years, and he served as a mentor to many other recovering alcoholics. He was known for his compassion, his wisdom, and his sense of humor.
In addition to his work, James was also an avid traveler. He had visited over 50 countries, and he loved to share his experiences with others. He had a special affinity for Central America, was fluent in Spanish and delved into its history.
James is survived by his mother, his two brothers, sister-in-law, brother-in-law and his many friends. He will be deeply missed by all who knew him.
