James's obituary

James Lee Prins, 84, passed away on Saturday, September 21, 2024, in Chatsworth, California. His life was one filled with love, laughter, and unwavering faith. His story was full of warmth and devotion to his family, friends, and God.

James was born on August 23, 1940, in Grand Rapids, Michigan, to Raymond and Jennie Englesma Prins. From a young age, he was known for his strong values and playful spirit.

After attending Calvin College, James joined the Army Reserves, where he had the honor of playing the trumpet at military funerals, paying tribute to those who served our country. He practiced his musical skills often, a symbol of his discipline and dedication.

In February 1965, James married Sally Ann Schofield. Together, they embarked on the adventure of raising two daughters, eventually leaving Michigan’s snowy winters for the sun-kissed shores of California. Though their marriage came to an end, his love and commitment to his daughters remained steadfast.

In 1982, James met Sandra Barker, with whom he shared a long and happy life until her passing in June 2019.

A man of deep faith, James's connection to his Christian beliefs defined much of his life. Sunday mornings were filled with the scent of peppermint as he passed out candies to his kids during church services. A ritual that continued on with all of his grandchildren. James attended Calvary Community Church in Westlake Village for more than 30 years, rarely missing a Sunday. He made deep and lasting friendships with parishioners who were a vital part of his spiritual journey.

Perhaps where James truly shined was as a grandpa, father, and friend. His grandchildren remember him not only as someone who gave unconditional love but also as the kind of grandpa who went out of his way to be present in their lives. He was always eager to hear their stories, share a laugh, or whip up a delicious pie from scratch—a skill he mastered later in life. James was the kind of man who put effort into staying connected, always ensuring his family knew how much they meant to him. His two daughters and seven grandchildren were his pride and joy, and he made sure they knew it with every action.

James had a zest for life that could be felt in everything he did. He was an avid golfer, spending hours on the course perfecting his swing. His humor was infectious, lighting up any room he entered. His love of good home cooking was no secret—prime rib, mashed potatoes, and buttered beans were his favorites. Meals were often shared with family or friends, who always felt welcome at his table.

James's story is one of a life well-lived and a man well-loved. He leaves behind a legacy of kindness, laughter, and devotion that will forever live in the hearts of those who knew him.

He is survived by his two daughters, Pamela and Kristin; his sons-in-laws, Tom and Abel; and seven grandchildren, Thomas, Adriana, Brody, Delany, Liliana, Connor, and Katy. He is also survived by his brother, Pete, as well as many nieces, nephews, and cousins.

James will be dearly missed by all who knew and loved him. The family will hold a private ceremony in Blowing Rock, nestled in the beautiful Blue Ridge Mountains—a place James often said he would have loved to move to and spend the rest of his elder years.
