Jim's obituary
Jim was always the entrepreneur and was introduced to the furniture manufacturing business by his father and took to it like a duck to water. His drive to succeed was simply a part of his genetic makeup; much like the phone was a life supporting appendage of his body. He started a furniture company in North Carolina in the mid-1950s and then ran several businesses in Virginia and Mississippi before launching, Pearl Grandfather Clocks followed by Pearl Mantels. He delighted in meeting people, developing relationships and selling his products. Jim never met a stranger and loved the art of the deal.
He cherished bible study, daily devotionals and John Grisham novels in between. Jim was extremely devoted to the Lord and was a much beloved and active member of the St. Andrew’s Episcopal Church. He served on the Vestry, was a Lector, a delegate to the Diocesan Convention and was very involved in Sunday school, parish activities and outreach ministry.
He was known as Jim, Dad, Daddy, Mr. Jim, Papa, Granddaddy and Poppy. He loved his family and relished in any and all of our accomplishments, always there to tell us how proud he was followed by a gentle, but firm, loving push forward that anything could be achieved if you put your mind to it. He saw the very best in each of us.
His tender and tasty secret recipe for beans and barbeque always delighted any who were lucky enough to have a taste as well as his breakfast pancakes, always accompanied by his highly accomplished slow cooked bacon (a technique he learned from his dad). He had a wonderful sense of humor and it was truly a joy to laugh with him. Happy Birthday serenades, tender hand holding and hearing those words, “I love you so much,” and "so good to hear your voice" will be deeply missed and always cherished memories.
Jim was predeceased by his mother Florence Pearl, his father Saul Pearl and his brother Richard Pearl. He is survived by his beloved wife and devoted caregiver Elizabeth Pearl, his son Carter Pearl, his son Pete Pearl (Jenice), his daughter Deirdre Wray (Marshall), his daughter Ashley Strange, his former wife and dear friend Pat Dole, his nieces and nephews Jennifer Pearl (Jared), Merrie Pearl (Dylan), Dawn Harper (Greg), Chris Smith (Becky), Jessica Bryan (Jay) and his grandchildren who gave him so much joy: Patrick, Bakh, Abby, Sam, Charlotte, Henry, Wynter, India, Matthew, Brooke, Taylor, Avery, Travis, Payton and his great grandson Reed.
You have provided for us, spirited us and loved us with your heart and soul and we are so grateful and blessed to have been a part of your journey. Your absence from our lives is only physical; until we meet again.
