For anyone who would like more information in general...THE THREE STATIONS OF A CATHOLIC FUNERAL RITE
Catholic funerals are steeped in tradition and ritual. They are a way to honor and respect the dead, saying goodbye to them and entrusting them in God’s hands. The Catholic funeral rite is composed of three parts: the Funeral Vigil, the Funeral Mass, and the Rite of Committal (burial or interment.) Each part is important and has special meaning.I. THE VIGIL
As the first part of the funeral rite, the vigil is celebrated following death and prior to the liturgy. In the vigil service, those who have been affected by the life of the deceased gather to pray for him or her. This is usually the first time since death when those related to the deceased gather together. According to the Order of Christian Funerals, “At the vigil, the Christian community keeps watch with the family in prayer to the God of mercy and finds strength in God’s presence.” Each funeral vigil includes prayers of intercession on behalf of the deceased. In this way, the lay faithful express their confidence in Christ in His victory over death. In this time of loss, the family and community turn to God’s word as the source of faith and hope, as light and life in the face of darkness and death. Consoled by the redeeming word of God and by the abiding presence of Christ and His Spirit, the assembly at the vigil calls upon the Father of mercy to receive the deceased into the kingdom of light and peace.” For many, the funeral vigil would be incomplete without devotions such as the Rosary or Divine Mercy Chaplet.
During the past year, with the challenges of Covid-19, we have somewhat altered and unfortunately been compelled to significantly delay the funeral rites for our loved one, our Dad, Dr. James Bradley. Our wish was to make it possible for as many of his friends and family who wished to attend to join us. The vigil, which normally occurs the evening before the Mass, will be celebrated as a Rosary and Divine Mercy prayer service before the funeral mass. It has been moved in our case to the morning before mass to accommodate those traveling to be with us as we lay our loved one to rest. We wished to allow all those in attendance the opportunity to pray with us.
19 Again I say unto you, That if two of you shall agree on earth as touching anything that they shall ask, it shall be done for them of my Father which is in heaven.20 For where two or three are gathered together in my name, there am I in the midst of them. Matthew 19:19 – 18:20What is a Rosary
Rosary, according to Merriam-Webster, means “a Roman Catholic devotion consisting of meditation on usually five sacred mysteries during the recitation of five decades of Hail Mary’s, of which each begins with an “Our Father” and ends with a “Gloria Patri.” The recitation of these words is often referred to as “praying the rosary.” The rosary can also refer to an item people use when praying the rosary to keep track of the prayers during the recitation, which consists of a string of beads, one for each of the prayers.
Why do we Pray the Rosary for the Deceased?
The rosary is devoted to Mary, the mother of Jesus. Catholic theology says that Mary made many promises regarding the recitation of the rosary that has to do with the “sanctification, or protection, of the souls of the dead.” While the rosary has many purposes, it is often prayed before, during, and after the time of death. It is considered an intercessory prayer, which asks for the Blessed Mother’s intercession on behalf of the deceased person. In addition, the prayers of the rosary help us to reflect upon the Paschal Mystery and lead us to a greater sense of hope at this time of grief. The rosary service usually lasts about 20 minutes.
You do not have to be Catholic or even Christian to attend or participate in a rosary service, and you may pray or recite the rosary without being a member of a Catholic Church. You may choose to attend and silently sit or kneel while those gathered say the words of the prayers together. Whether or not to participate is an individual decision. It is helpful to use rosary beads while praying the rosary to keep track of the repetitive prayers so as not to lose count of how many “Hail Mary’s” are said during each decade. You are not required to have rosary beads to participate in the rosary, and also can follow the lead of others in attendance if you don’t have your own beads. We will provide Rosary Beads for all those in attendance if you choose to use them, and for you to keep and take with you. There will also be a prayer leader guiding the order of prayers, as well as a printed guide for you to follow along if you wish. Even though the prayers may be repetitive, the rosary is considered a meditative prayer. During the recitation, we meditate on the mysteries announced at the beginning of each decade. Why do we pray for the dead? We pray for the dead because we want to help our loved ones get to Heaven. For those who need more unification with Christ, Catholics believe that we have the gift of Purgatory. Purgatory is a combination of God’s justice and mercy, both of which are perfectly intertwined and fulfilled there. It is a place of purification, or purgation. Most of us will enter this state, or condition (not a place) after we die, because we will have to atone for every sin we committed on earth, even venial ones. All who enter Purgatory are assured of eternal salvation in Heaven, but may still have certain imperfections and attachments, whether to people, possessions, position, or other worldly things. These separate us from God and prevent us from experiencing the complete and utter joy God plans for us in Heaven. Our prayers can help shorten their time in Purgatory. Our prayers can more quickly bring them to the eternal embrace of God in Heaven. How beautiful! God, in His infinite goodness, wants us to participate in others’ salvation. He does not need us to, but He loves us so much that he wants to collaborate with us on the path to Heaven. Therefore, he made atonement for the dead, so that they might be delivered from their sin. -2Maccabees 12:45b.
The Rosary is one of the most powerful spiritual tools available to us. It is particularly powerful in praying for the dead. Each Hail Mary even ends with asking for grace in death: “pray for us sinners, now and at the hour of our death.” When we die, our soul - the eternal reflection of the Triune God – never dies, and thus we pray for the souls of the deceased. There is quite possibly nothing as consoling as the cadence of a Rosary prayed for a soul who has recently died. We know that earthly death is merely a transition, not a finality. And the souls in Purgatory cannot pray for themselves. Therefore, they rely upon those of us still on earth to remember them in prayer, to help expedite their arrival into heaven, alleviating any suffering their souls may encounter, and grant them renewed hope for their eternal reward.WHAT IS THE DIVINE MERCY CHAPLET?
The Chaplet of the Divine Mercy is a prayer said for those who are dying or for the souls of our loved ones who have died. Many are not familiar with the Divine Mercy Chaplet. It is a devotion prayed using regular Rosary beads and was given to us by Saint Faustina, who was given the prayers by Jesus himself in 1935, so it is a relatively new devotion. Jesus gave many promises for those who recite the Chaplet, one of which is great mercy for a dying soul. He also promised to stand with the souls of the deceased not in judgement, but as the compassionate Savior, immersing these souls in His mercy, providing indulgences on their behalf. Praying for the dying is essential to the message of Divine Mercy, and it is never too late to pray the Chaplet for them. God is outside of time, and He will hear our prayers.
The Divine Mercy Chaplet takes about seven minutes to recite. The devotion will be guided by a prayer leader, and the rosary beads used for the recitation of the rosary can be used for the Divine Mercy as well. We will also provide a written guide if you would like to follow along. As with the rosary, you do not have to be Catholic or even Christian to attend or participate in the Divine Mercy Chaplet, and you may pray or recite the prayers without being a member of a Catholic Church. You may choose to attend and silently sit or kneel while those gathered say the words of the prayers together. Whether or not to participate is an individual decision.II. THE MASS OF CHRISTIAN BURIAL
For Catholics, the celebration of the Mass is both the source and the summit of our faith. Hence, when we celebrate the Mass at the time of death, it is seen as the fullest expression of our faith in God’s abundant mercy, our hope in the resurrection of the dead, and the love that God has for us, which is not extinguished even by death.
III. THE RITE OF COMMITTAL
The Rite of Committal is celebrated at the place of burial. In the committal of the body to its place of rest, we express our hope that the deceased will experience the glory of the resurrection. As a former member of the United States Army, where he served for thirteen years, Jim will also have his cremated remains interred at Georgia National Cemetery with full military honors.

After the burial, we will have a short break in time for anyone who would like to change into something more comfortable and casual, and maybe rest for a short while after a full day. Then, we would love to welcome you to our home for a final gathering to celebrate the life of an extraordinary man. This Celebration of Life event will include a Mexican meal, in recognition of his over 20 years in the desert Southwest. It will be an upbeat and positive tribute to Jim's life, all the things he loved, and the people he touched. We will have dinner and share our memories. We will also have an Open Mic for anyone wanting to say a few words. Daddy was adventurous and loved to have fun, so we hope for this evening to honor his life and legacy. Please know that if you can attend all portions of the day, all are welcome. But if you have other obligations and can only attend one or two events, we understand and would love to have you join in whatever you are able.
