James's obituary

James Meredith was born in Kosciusko, Mississippi and was the first ever African American to attend the University of Mississippi in 1962, and graduated with a degree in political science. He has also received his law degree from Columbia University, and a masters degree in economics from University of Ibadan in Nigeria. He has lived as a civil rights activist since he was very young, participating in solo marches and fighting for racial equality in different ways. Alongside of that, Meredith was in the Air Force and was an active member in the Republican Party. In 1967, he unsuccessfully ran for a seat in the House of Representatives, but remained active in the party until 1991. Meredith has also written multiple books throughout his lifetime.
In recent years, Meredith has continued to be active in civil rights and education issues, particularly through his nonprofit organization, the Meredith Institute.
