My baby brother, Jimmy McNiff, is finally at peace.

He died on impact in the Duruo River at age 42 on March 31st in Porto, Portugal.

Words are inadequate to convey his journey and the depth of our loss. I have loved him as my own since the day he was born.
My heart is broken for me, for all of us here without him and yet I have peace knowing that his suffering is done.

Jimmy had treatment resistant depression and likely bipolar type 2. He fought hard every day since his teens when the intrusive thoughts and suicidal ideation started and never stopped. Over the past 28 years he tried several medications, therapies, read books and more recently devoted himself to learning how to stay regulated, desiring to never be the source of harm for anyone else. Jimmy's empathy for all who had been harmed often overwhelmed him. His brain never gave him a break from the weight of all the harm, all the problems on a global, environmental scale.

Jimmy's move to Portugal was his plan b. A way to keep trying when life here had become untenable. Right to the very end he was trying to find a way forward and do no harm.
