James (Jim) Edgar McGirr, of Austin, Texas, formerly of Duxbury, MA, Port St. Lucie, FL, and Clayton, NY, passed away peacefully with his family on the morning of June 8, 2025. He was 79 years old.
Born in Everett, MA to Beverly (Whelan) and James McGirr, Jim was raised in Malden, MA and graduated from Rochester Institute of Technology in 1967, where he met Harriet. Married in 1968, the couple’s first child Shannon was born at Fort Benning, GA while Jim trained in the Army to go to Vietnam. After his discharge, Jim began his 45-year career in printing. Kathryn was born in Danville, IL and Graham was born in Duxbury, MA where they lived for 30 years. Jim cherished the many friendships built during his career, from the days of learning the trade to those building his printing company, Cranberry Graphics, in Carver and Plymouth MA. In 2004, Jim and Harriet decided to split their time between the Thousand Islands of Clayton, NY on the St. Lawrence river and the warm winters of Port St. Lucie, FL.
Over almost 57 years, Jim and Harriet enjoyed time spent riding motorcycles and disagreeing about who knew best how to navigate the waters of Duxbury and Clayton in their motorboat. Jim’s happy places were on his lawnmower (often with a visiting grandchild riding on the back) and spending the night around a bonfire with friends and family…and a beer or two.
In 2022 Jim and Harriet moved to Austin, Texas after Jim’s Alzheimers diagnosis required more help from family.
Jim is survived by his wife Harriet (Reddick), their three children, Shannon (and Marc) Sanders, Kathryn (and Greg) Jackson and Graham (and Stephanie) McGirr, his three sisters, Georgia Crowley, Mary Ann Manning and Beverly Varga, and eight grandchildren, Sydney, Brooke, and Abbey Sanders, Jacob and Jane Jackson and Griffin, Phoebe and Penelope McGirr. He always enjoyed his many nieces and nephews and the friends he made wherever he was.
Donations can be made to the Alzheimers Association to help find a cure for this horrible disease.
