Growing up , virtually every Sunday in summer, the McCabe & Burns families would head out to Uncle Bob & Aunt Mary’s cottage on Silver Lake for an afternoon of pure joy. It’s not like Bob & Mary needed more children on their dock, they had 13 of their own. Add 12 Burns & 7 McCabes, along with some friends we could sneak into the family cars, it all contributed to, using the title of a Neil Diamond song, “A Beautiful Noise.” All were welcome. The photo is of Leo taking a backward jump off the diving board. No doubt, Jim was not far behind as Leo & Jim were not only first cousins, but the best of friends. Leo was a classmate of Jim’s at St. Patrick’s HS, and Senior Class President. As nightfall would come, and it was time to go home, inevitably, the outcries would come, “can I stay over…” Some of us would hide out in the cottage,  hoping not to be missed in the crowded car heading home. That may have been our first exercise of Fr. Corey’s advice, “It’s better to ask for forgiveness, than permission.”

Dennis — I first got to know Jim, and soon thereafter Jim Sr, when your brother and I were dating the Lesko sisters Rose and Connie, nearly 55 years ago. This was at least six years before my partner and I created our ad agency, and twelve before I produced your dad’s media in his final Assembly campaign, when I got to know the two Jims well. (Their calm demeanor and easy wit were the McCabe style and brand — qualities you share, my good friend.) That Jim followed in your dad’s political footsteps seemed as natural and inevitable as fate. I remember the disappointment among many in Broome County (and not just Democrats) when Jim’s job took him and his beloved Rose to Albany. The news of Jim’s passing comes as another shock in a year of such losses. My heart goes out to the McCabes and Leskos all. As Jerry observed, it’s hardest on those left behind. The sober reality of our waning time amongst the living becomes brutally real with each of these passings among us. Losing a sibling sucks. Now take up the brand, my friend, and show the world how intelligence and wit shall always win the day, as only a McCabe can! These are the McCabe gift, and they must thrive in a world gone to the dark side.

Jim served 3 terms in the Broome County Legislature, winning all 3 of his campaigns. We met Senator Humphrey in 1976 when he was the speaker at a dinner at the Fountain Pavilion in Johnson City, in support of then-Congressman Matt McHugh. When this photo was taken, Dad was a NYS Assemblyman, I was Mayor of Johnson City, Jim was a candidate for BC Legislature, and former VP Humphrey was a US Senator from Minnesota. Nicknamed “The Happy Warrior,” Humphrey was delightful and gave a very uplifting speech. I recall one line of his,“I know I often talk too long, but I enjoy talking.” I don’t recall if his speech was long because I enjoyed every minute of it, as did Jim & Dad. After his speech, he stepped out to call his wife, Muriel, which he did every day when he was away from home, telling her about the people he met in the community he was visiting. In November, 1976, Jim was elected by a wide margin to his 1st term on the BC Legislature. Bob Taugher was his campaign manager, and Bob later told me that he had been involved in many campaigns over the years, but he had never seen a candidate happier than Jim was on election night. Jim caught Humphrey’s “Happy Warrior,” approach to politics and public service, and his constituents appreciated it.

I have discovered and am reading what is an announcement associated with what is an announcement of Jim’s passing. I had lost touch and, despite seeing Dennis fairly frequently, had no idea that Jim was in poor health. He was a great guy and a good friend and legislative colleague. Rose, my deepest sympathy to you, your sons, Dennis and the rest of the family. We spent a lot of time together on the legislature and after while he was still living here in Binghamton. Regrettably, we had lost touch with each other than brief occasional updates through Dennis. I valued him as a legislative colleague and good friend. He is in my thoughts and prayers.
