This is in response to Ever Loved’s question, “How did you first meet James McCabe Jr.”…It was on or about April 7, 1952. Jim came to visit me in the newborn babies nursery of Lourdes Hospital. After an initial chat, including Jim telling me how very cute I was, Jim had the music changed from baby lullabies to rock and roll, leading off with The Drifters. We talked about Mickey Mantle, Whitey Ford and Yogi Berra, and the prospects for the Yankees in 1952. After we broke out of the nursery, I recall watching the 1952 World Series with Jim, and we were delighted that the Yankees defeated the Brooklyn Dodgers 4 games to 3. We went on to watch many World Series together, my favorite being when Jim pretended to be sick every day of one year’s World Series so he could watch the games with me rather than attending school. Miraculously, he recovered right after the Yankees won. Go Yankees!

I think the best thing I remember about Grandpa was his sense of humor. In light of that I’d like to share a story about him and Grandma.
Colin and I were visiting Wake Forest during summer vacation from school. Now one of our favorite parts of our trips was being able to spend hours and hours up at the community pool swimming. So as you can imagine we would always walk up, excited like little kids on Christmas. So one of these days Grandma had taken us up to the pool while Grandpa was sleeping back at the house. Colin and I splashed around for a while but eventually started to get a bit bored with just the two of us. So the usual begging and pleading took place “Grandma pleaseeeeee” “I promise it’ll only be for a little bit”. So after a few minutes of us asking she caves (like the amazing Grandma she is) and walks into the pool with us. About 10-15 minutes later she’s swims around and I notice that she had left her phone in the back pocket of her shorts. So I told her and once she realized we immediately got out of the pool and tried to save the thing, but it was pretty clear the phone was toast. Now when we get home and Grandpa wakes up, we tell him the story. He couldn’t believe it. He started laughing and poking fun at Grandma for making such a silly mistake, because obviously he would never. And he wouldn’t stop laughing about it in the next several days, it became the joke of that vacation.
So those next few days go bye and we are back at the pool again and convince Grandpa to play Al with us in the deep end. Now, unbeknownst to him…..he just walked into the pool with his phone! Once we finished playing he climbs out and Grandma just starts laughing once she sees him. Obviously he had zero clue what was so hilarious until she pointed out the phone in his back pocket. At first he was irritated because he had liked that phone and used it for many years. Then Colin points out that he just spent the last 48 hours clowning Grandma for walking into the pool with her phone. You know what he does? He just does that signature Jim McCabe head pat and busts out laughing. Sure he was mad, but he almost instantly found the humor and irony in the situation. He could’ve sat and stewed about having to buy two new phones in a week and making a stupid decision, but instead he made it a family moment between the four of us. And I believe this illustrates a common theme with Grandpa, he often turned a frustrating moment into something light and humorous. It’s moments like these that stick with me.
I also see it in his sons especially. I don’t think I’ve had a single visit with my Uncles that hasn’t been filled with pedantic humor that would sound like straight nonsense to other people. And that’s the beauty of it, all of them can take a frustrating situation, and pose some ridiculous question or a wild scenario that never fails to make the others die laughing.

Duke 14- ND 13, 50 seconds left in the game, 4th & 16 yards to go for ND. Jim loved to recount QB Sam Hartman running for 17 yards for the crucial 1st down. Next play, ND TD. The Irish win 21-14. Go Irish ☘️
