James's obituary
James (Jim/Jimmy) Vincent Looby of Las Vegas, Nevada passed away with family at his side at the age of 75 on February 11, 2023.
Jim was born on December 30, 1947, in New Jersey to Michael and Cleopatra Looby. From a young age, Jim’s intelligence shined. His elementary school teachers marveled at his gifts as they asked him to stand up and teach the class for them (a memory he delighted in sharing). To further nurture his learning, his parents sent him to the Cathedral Choir School of St. John the Divine at the age of 10, a boarding school in New York. From there, he went on to St. Paul’s, a highly selective college-preparatory, boarding school in New Hampshire. Jim then attended Harvard University, entering at a sophomore level due to his academic achievements at St. Paul’s. He went on to attend and graduate from Southwestern Law School and receive an LLM from Emory University. Upon completion of his education, Jim was hired as a tax attorney for Hochman Salkin & DeRoy in Los Angeles, California. After retiring from practicing law, Jim moved to Las Vegas, Nevada.
Jim is survived by his three children Chelsea Looby, Alison Looby-DeYoung, and Jeffrey Looby, and his two grand-children Collette and Walter DeYoung. His children were his proudest accomplishment and he will be remembered as a father who was gentle, thoughtful, and kind.
Known as the game of a lifetime, playing bridge was a passion of Jim’s. He traveled across the country playing in tournaments, creating many lifelong friendships. Jim will be dearly missed by those he played with. Some of Jim’s other favorite things were a delicious steak dinner, Starbucks coffee with a 1:1 ratio of coffee to cream, playing golf, and rooting for the Dodgers with his daughter Chelsea during baseball season.
The family will be celebrating the life of Jim at a private event. In lieu of flowers or donations, the family asks that you perform a random act of kindness in honor of Jim’s memory.
