James's obituary
With deep sorrow, we announce the passing of Mr. James "Buddy" Smith, He was born on the 19th of August, 1948, and took his final bow from this mortal realm on the 25th of September, 2024.
He leaves behind his loving children, daughter Lela Smith and son Rev. Charles Smith, who will forever cherish his memory. He also leaves behind his grandson, Matthew Erthein, and granddaughters Laura and Lillian Erthein, who held a special place in his heart. He is also survived by his nephew, Christopher Smith. James was predeceased by his cherished parents, Charles Smith and Lela Gayheart-Smith and brother Charles (Gigi) Smith.
A graduate of Ferguson High School, James was a man of diverse interests Having a penchant for guns, WWII history, diamonds, and blondes. His personality was as vibrant as his interests, leaving an indelible mark on everyone he met.
James served as a veteran in the Vietnam War as a part of the US Army Infantry. His bravery, dedication, and commitment during his time of service were commendable and made him a true hero amongst his family and friends. After serving his country, he spent his professional career at the Yorktown Naval Weapons Station, before retiring in 2002. His contribution, both in the battlefield and his profession, is something that will long be admired and remembered.
James also enjoyed the fellowship of his long time friends John Norman, Kevin Scott, and Greg Zupka. The breakfast club at the Warwick Cafe and The dedicated care of the Newport News nursing and rehabilitation staff.
