Dale's obituary
James “Dale” Emmert age 87, passed away peacefully at his home in Grinnell, Ia on January 30th surrounded by his loving family. He attended Malcom country school for 8 years and graduated from Montezuma High School in 1948. He worked for the County Engineers office until he was drafted into the army in June of 1952. He was stationed at Camp Chaffee in Fort Smith, Arkansas for two years. He wrote Dona Gritsch love letters while he was stationed there and on December 27th of 1952 he married Dona in Nashua, IA at the Little Brown Church while on leave. Dale then came back and worked for Powesheik county until March of 1955 after his Honorable Discharge from the service. Dale and Dona moved to a farm southeast of Grinnell on Ewart Road, where he farmed most of his life and raised 4 children. Dale was a member and leader of 4-H. From 1990 to 2000 he also worked for Vannoy Chevrolet in Montezuma selling cars. Dale enjoyed spending time with his family, traveling, fishing, playing cards, bowling, and playing golf at Montezuma Country Club where Dale and Dona were members for many years. He loved going for coffee every morning at the Elks Club where he was a life time member and other places as well where he enjoyed the company of his many friends. He was a kind and humorous man and all ways made you feel at home. In 2013 Dale and Dona moved to a duplex at the Mayflower in Grinnell and he resided there for the rest of his life.
Dale is preceded in death by his parents and brother and sister. Dale is survived by his wife Dona and his four children, Vicki (Keith) Fuquay, Michael (Lynda) Emmert, Diane Nixon, Charlie (Tomas) Lasansky, as well as his eight grandchildren: Bob (Jenny) Emmert, Amanda (Jesse Aranda) Emmert, Jessica (Lou) Keefe, Rory (Heather) Lasansky, Chad (Alisha) Nixon, Christy (Chris) Goins, Trenton (Kirstin) Emmert, Abby (Josh) Manning and eleven great-grandchildren: Aiden and Liam Keefe, Dylan and Karlie Emmert, Cameron and Issac Cannady and Rylee Goins, Kaylee Aranda, McKinley and Lilly Nixon, and Lila Lasansky.
A Celebration of life will be held at the Presbyterian Evangelical Church in Montezuma, Iowa on February 16, 2019. Visitation will begin at 10:00 AM with a service at 11:00 AM and a luncheon following at the church.
The Emmert family would like to thank caregivers, neighbors, friends, and family for their support and encouragement these past weeks. Additionally, they also want to express their deepest appreciation to Grinnell Regional Hospice and the Mayflower for the care they provided during the last weeks of Dale’s life.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Presbyterian Evangelical Church in Montezuma, or to P.A.L.S in Grinnell.
