Jim's obituary

James Edward Martin, 62, of Calgary, Alberta, Canada, passed away on May 4, 2024, with his family at his side, after a battle with gastric cancer.

Jim was born on January 26, 1962, to Francis Thomas Martin, Jr. and Wendy Margaret (Rix) Martin at Plattsburgh AFB, New York.

After graduating from McMaster University in Hamilton, Ontario, he worked at jobs including managing a service station and working at a refinery before starting a long career in railroading with Canadian Pacific Railway, now known as Canadian Pacific Kansas City (CPKC). He held a number of different positions at the railway, most recently as a hazmat specialist. Jim took great pride and satisfaction working at the railway and often spoke of his coworkers.

Jim was a very affable person with a good sense of humor and made a great impression on people with his polite and respectful demeanor. Some of his hobbies were traveling; trips to Costa Rica, Ireland, cottage country in Ontario, and the U.S. come to mind. He also spent time at an archeological dig site in Israel. He enjoyed playing guitar and was very fond of his greyhounds.  He loved sports especially football (Kansas City Chiefs) and baseball (Baltimore Orioles) and he often attended local sporting events in Calgary.

Jim traveled to Maryland to help his family take care of his father in hospice care and his help was greatly appreciated. He ended up being away from his home for a lot longer than any of us anticipated, and we never could have imagined that we would lose him.

Jim is survived by his parents, Frank and Wendy Martin of Salisbury, Maryland, sister Theresa Martin, of Denton, North Carolina, and brother Stephen J. Martin (Doris Everett) of Ellicott City, Maryland.

A small, quiet service will be held at Jim’s parents’ home with family and a pastor Jim had come to know during his stay at his parents’ home. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to Northwest Canadian Greyhound League or the Canadian Cancer Society.
