Jim's obituary

James Clay “Jim” Connelly, 69, born on April 27,1956 in San Francisco, California the youngest of five sons to Marcene & Wallace Connelly, peacefully passed away on September 17, 2025, in Santa Clara, California. He married Susan (Franco) Connelly in May 1987, though divorced after 30 years, they remained connected due to their daughter, Jacqueline Jenell “Jackie” (Connelly) Manrique, Jim's biggest and most notable life accomplishment. He proudly gave her away in marriage to his son-in law, Michael Manrique in 2016.

Jim lived a life full of energy, character, and unmistakable presence. A graduate of Santa Clara High School and Santa Clara Lions alumni, Jim held many records in his athletic abilities. He went on to a career in the State of California’s Department of Agriculture as a medfly Trapper. In this role, he became known for his deep knowledge and expertise—traits that earned him respect among colleagues.

For countless decades he dedicated himself to the youth of his community. His greatest passions were coaching baseball at Briarwood- El Camino Big League and Santa Clara Pony Baseball League. Jim was also an instrumental football coach within the Santa Clara Lions program. In both sports, he led many teams to championships and proudly boasted about his players, their athletic abilities and memorable personalities alike. All of his players impacted him in one way or another- this brought him great joy and fulfillment.

He had an undeniable passion for sports and could talk endlessly about games and athletes across all levels. Though his teams included the Dallas Cowboys, San Francisco Giants, and Golden State Warriors, he appreciated greatness wherever it appeared. His love for competition extended beyond the screen—he enjoyed playing pool and darts with friends and family and never missed a chance to test his luck at casino games or cheer on horse and car races.

Jim’s creativity shone through in his hobbies. He found joy in building and painting model and RC cars with meticulous attention to detail. Music was another joy of his, specifically Blues—he loved listening to it loud and singing even louder. His voice filled rooms not just with sound but with spirit.

Jim was a man who lived life unapologetically and with great flair. His personality was as bold as his favorite colognes and as unforgettable as his perfectly styled hair. Whether it was his fresh outfits or the confident swagger in his step, Jim carried himself with a charisma that left a lasting impression on everyone he met. He was carefree yet deeply caring, loud yet thoughtful—a man of contrasts who embraced every part of who he was.

Not only was Jim a free spirit but he loved the free feeling of riding his Harley Davidson after spending hours rebuilding and repainting it. He enjoyed riding solo, with friends and on occasion with his daughter.

Above all else, Jim cared deeply for those close to him. He offered guidance candidly—often punctuated by his signature phrase: “Do as I say, not as I do.” His advice came from experience; his words carried weight because they were real. Those fortunate enough to receive them will carry them forward, always.

Jim is lovingly remembered and survived by his daughter Jacqueline“Jackie” Manrique, son-in-law Michael Manrique, brother Stephen Connelly, brother Richard Connelly, and sister-in-law Linda Connelly. He was preceded in death by his parents Marcene and Wallace Connelly, brothers Craig and Thomas Connelly whom he now joins in peace. He will reunite with many good friends including Bob Pollard, Gilbert Gaeta, Wayne & Jesse Hicks and many others.

May the memory of Jim bring comfort to those who knew him—his smile, his voice, his laughter echoing on in hearts forever touched by his presence.

A Celebration of Life will be held on Saturday, November 1, 2025, from 11:00am to 3:00pm at Saint Lawrence School/Parish Gymnasium located at 1971 St. Lawrence Dr.,  Santa Clara,  Ca 95051.
