James's obituary

James Joseph Castillo

May 24, 1949 - April 15, 2024

(Houston, Texas)

James Joseph Castillo passed away on April 15, 2024 after a long battle with diabetes and kidney disease. He outlived all medical expectations for years thanks to the constant care of his loving wife, Betty Castillo.

Born in Houston, Texas in 1949, James was the oldest of 4 children. James met Betty at San Jacinto High School (now converted to the Houston Community College central campus) where he played trumpet in the marching band and later in the jazz band. The High School sweethearts were married in 1971 and had three sons.

His love of music and art lasted throughout his life. He played trumpet on the album for the band, Los Pablos (1970), and later picked up his trumpet again to play with the HCC Jazz Band in the early 2000’s. James spent much of his professional career as an architectural draftsman and enjoyed drawing and painting in his free time. One of his all-time favorite activities was performing as an adult chorus member in the cast of broadway musicals produced by the Houston International Theatre School (HITS) that happen each spring at the Miller Outdoor Theater in Hermann Park.

In the end, his heart belonged to his children and grandchildren. Always available to make time and play, James would do anything to make sure they were smiling and happy.

He is remembered by his Wife, Betty, their Sons, James, Mark, and Michael; and their three beautiful grandchildren, Eli, Leila, and Hope. James is also survived by his Sister Lauren Hogan and her husband Charles, Brother Raul Castillo, and Brother in Law Bill Rogers. He is preceded in death by his parents, Joe Felix and Pauline Castillo, and his Sister, Martha Rogers.

A funeral service for James will be held on Friday, May 10, 2024 at 11:00 am at St. Patrick Catholic Church, 4918 Cochran St, Houston, TX 77009. There will be a reception in the church Hall immediately following.
