James's obituary

It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of James “Carlton” Moore. A dedicated father, cherished grandfather, beloved brother, and soon-to-be great-grandfather, who left this earthly world to be with his heavenly father on December 9, 2024 after a courageous 2 ½ year battle with cancer.

James, or Carlton as he was known as, was born in Daytona Beach, Fl on January 5, 1958 to James Willis Moore and JoAnn Cecelia Johns. A proud graduate of Mainland High School’s Class of 1976, Carlton later moved to St. Augustine, where he began working for CRG Productions. It was there he met Jeannine, who would become his wife. Carlton adopted Jeannine’s two children, Garry (Amanda) Moore and Vicki Moore, and together they welcomed their youngest child, Magdalen (Jason) Culbreth. Although their marriage ended, their friendship and Carlton’s love for all three of his children flourished. His enduring love, support and encouragement were pivotal in shaping their lives.

Carlton built a fulfilling career with the St. Johns County Clerk of Court, where his hard work and dedication left a lasting impression on colleagues and friends before his retirement. Carlton had many hobbies that he was passionate about, but none as much as managing his son’s band, Elwood St. Johns in the early 2000’s.

In 2004 Carlton welcomed his first grandchild, Olivia Guffey. In the years to follow he proudly welcomed eight more granddaughters: Arianna Moore, Lena Moore, Stella Marsh, Hattie Moore, Teagan Culbreth, Lydia Baker, Scarlett Culbreth and Avery Culbreth, whose lives he filled with joy and laughter. Carlton was eagerly anticipating the arrival of his great-granddaughter, Vivian Bennett, heralding a new chapter of love and joy in his family’s ever-expanding legacy.

In June of 2022, Carlton was diagnosed with Urachal cancer, which he jokingly referred to as “fighting the dragon”. His will and determination to be ‘written into the books’, to continue to live this life he loved, brought him further than the Dr’s ever expected. He fought hard and with everything that he had. Carlton now joins those who have gone before him: his father, James; mother, JoAnn; stepfather, Harold; and brother, Greg. Though he has departed this world, his spirit and memory will forever live on in the hearts of those who had the privilege of knowing him.

As we mourn the loss of James “Carlton” Moore, we also celebrate the beautiful memories he leaves behind. His laughter, kindness, and zest for life will continue to inspire his family and friends. A celebration of life will be held on his birthday, January 5th, from 11a.m. to 2p.m at The Milano Room, 1915 A1A South, St. Augustine, Fl, inviting all whose lives were touched by Carlton to gather in remembrance of this remarkable man. May his memory bring comfort to all who loved him.
