Jimmy's obituary
James Edward Bruns “Jimmy”, 78, of Sun City, Florida, passed away peacefully on November 5, 2025, surrounded by those who loved him most. Born on February 27, 1947, in Minneapolis Minnesota, Jimmy grew up with a deep sense of duty, integrity, and devotion to family—values that guided him throughout every chapter of his life.
The son of Warren and Cathren Bruns, Jimmy spent his early years in Minnesota before getting to travel the world with his family. A proud veteran, he served in the Vietnam War, an experience that shaped his personality. After returning home, he dedicated himself to public service once again, this time as a police officer for Anoka County.
In 2007, Jimmy married the love of his life, Cheri Jacobs, in a beautiful ceremony at Fairy Hill Green House. Their marriage was marked by laughter, shared adventures, and quiet moments together. From the start it was clear that Cheri was the greatest joy of his life, and those who knew them could see the truth of that in every way.
A man whose heart always led him to give, Jimmy was deeply involved with the Big Lake American Legion, where he worked proudly alongside fellow veterans and community members. His generosity extended beyond his local work—he regularly donated to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital, believing wholeheartedly in supporting families and children in need.
Above all else, Jimmy’s greatest accomplishment was taking care of his family. He is survived by his cherished wife, Cheri Jacobs; his children, Matt Jacobs, Beth (Tim) Geheren; his Grandchildren, Baylee (Brenden) St. Yves, Anna Jacobs, Belle Jacobs; Great Grandchildren Adalayna St. Yves, and Daniel St. Yves; his brother, Thomas (Charlotte) Bruns; and his sisters, Patrica Bruns and Adele (Fred) Klietz. He was predeceased by his father, Warren Bruns; his mother, Cathren Bruns; and father figure, David Anderson. Jimmy’s family will forever remember his warmth, humor, and unwavering devotion to those he loved. His presence made every gathering brighter, his laughter more contagious than any sound in the room.
Dependable, honest, and kind, Jimmy lived a life that was centered not on himself, but on the people around him. Whether offering a helping hand, sharing a story from his younger day, or simply making someone smile, he found purpose in making others feel valued and cared for.
A celebration of Jimmy’s life will be held this spring in Big Lake, Minnesota, among the friends and family he held so dear. All who were touched by his spirit are invited to attend and share their memories of a man who gave so much of himself to others.
In place of flowers, the family kindly asks that donations be made to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital in Jimmy’s name—a fitting tribute to his lifelong generosity and big-hearted nature.
