James's obituary

James "Jim" Andrew Blackburn, a beloved father, grandfather, brother, and friend, passed away peacefully on February 12, 2026, in Tulsa, Oklahoma. Born on May 14, 1945, in Elkhorn, Wisconsin, Jim lived a life defined by faith, love, and service to others.

Jim’s journey of education and career was as remarkable as his character. He attended the University of Iowa, where he earned a bachelor’s degree in Nuclear Medicine. Later, he pursued a Master’s in Business Administration at Sangamon State University, graduating with an impressive 4.0 GPA. Over 18 years later, driven by his enduring passion for medicine and helping others, Jim returned to school to earn his nursing degree. This led him to work in the ICU at St. John’s Hospital in Springfield, Illinois—a role that allowed him to combine his medical expertise with his compassionate nature.

Jim was deeply devoted to his family and faith. He is survived by his children: Chris (Julie), Heather (Jason), and Peter; six grandchildren: Andrew, Patrick, Leighanne, Mikayla, Shannon (Matt), and Sean; and one great-grandson, Sylas. He also leaves behind his siblings: Beth (Dick), Judy, and Tim (Jodi). Jim was preceded in death by his parents, his older brother George, sister-in-law Nancy, his brother-in-law Gary, and most heartbreakingly for him, the love of his life Mary Beth.

Jim met Mary Beth when he was just 16 years old. Their love story spanned decades—through raising children together, navigating career changes and medical challenges, moving across states, and ultimately facing the loss of Mary Beth two years ago after 56 years of marriage. Their bond was rooted in their shared faith in Jesus Christ and their unwavering commitment to one another.

Throughout his life, Jim found joy in a wide variety of activities that reflected his adventurous spirit and generous heart. He cherished time spent visiting family and participating in mission trips with Hope and Healing Africa alongside his son Pete, sister Judy and grandson Patrick. He enjoyed riding four-wheelers through the countryside, practicing at the shooting range, baking delicious treats for loved ones to enjoy, and pitching for church softball games.

Above all else, Jim will be remembered as a man who embodied kindness and love. His faith was central to everything he did—he was known for his deep love for Jesus Christ—and this devotion shaped how he treated everyone around him. Whether through acts of service or simply offering a listening ear or warm smile, Jim had an extraordinary ability to make those around him feel valued.

May James "Jim" Andrew Blackburn’s memory serve as a source of comfort to all who knew him. His legacy of faithfulness to God and dedication to family will continue to inspire those whose lives he touched so deeply. A Celebration of Life will be held on March 21, 2026, from 10:00 AM to 11:15 AM at First Baptist Church 201 Ron Rice Ave.
