James's obituary
James “Jim” O. Baril, 82, of Leesburg, Florida, passed away peacefully on Sunday, June 29, 2025, surrounded by love, after a gradual decline in health.
Born on January 1, 1943, in Seattle, Washington, Jim was the son of Albert and Helmie (Zehner) Baril. A true New Year’s baby, Jim brought joy and laughter into every chapter of his life.
Jim proudly served in the U.S. Navy as a Radioman aboard the USS Enterprise aircraft carrier and the USS Edisto icebreaker. After his military service, he wore many hats—Contractor, Farmer, Teacher of Basic Electricity at Maplewood Career Center, and ultimately, Electrician at General Motors, where he worked for 31 years until his well-earned retirement.
A man of many talents and a relentless work ethic, Jim also found joy in life’s simple pleasures. He was happiest outdoors, whether on the golf course, at a campsite, fishing, or in his woodworking shop crafting something with care. But perhaps Jim's greatest craft was storytelling. With a sparkle in his eye and a hearty laugh that often brought tears to his own, he had a way of turning even the smallest moment into a memorable tale.
Ask Jim how he was doing and you’d likely hear, “fair to middling.” Ask how he was feeling, and with a grin he’d reply, “with my fingers.” After a satisfying meal, he’d lean back, pat his stomach, and say, “good snack—what’s for dinner?” His humor and warmth made him beloved by all who knew him.
Jim is survived by his devoted wife of 31 years, Joan (Lewis) Baril. The couple were married on June 29, 1994, in Ravenna, Ohio, and shared a rich life together in Garrettsville, Ohio, before retiring to sunny Florida.
He is also survived by his children James (Katie) Baril, Kathy Baril, and Jason Baril; stepdaughters Evelyn (Steve) Glova and Becky (Mike) Thiry; 14 grandchildren; and 4 great-grandchildren—all of whom will miss him dearly and remember him fondly.
Jim’s legacy lives on in the laughter he inspired, the wisdom he shared, and the love he gave so freely. He will be deeply missed, always remembered, and forever cherished.
A celebration of Jim’s life will be held at a later date in Ohio, where friends and family can gather to share stories, memories, and love.
