Jim's obituary

James “Jim” Augins, a man of intellect, quiet wit, and deep reflection, passed away on February 2, 2026, at the age of 81. Born on May 21, 1944, Jim lived a life defined by integrity, discipline, and a lifelong respect for education. He believed in doing things the right way — thoughtfully, honestly, and with purpose — and those values shaped both his work and his family.

Jim’s greatest pride was the family he built with his beloved wife, Renee, his partner of 59 years. Together they created a home grounded in loyalty, resilience, and love. He is survived by his devoted wife, Renee Augins; his children, Jessica Hayden and Michael Augins; his son-in-law, Bob Hayden; and his daughter-in-law, Tracy Reitz.

He was a proud and loving grandfather to Hunter and Anna Marie Augins; Julia and Maxwell Hayden; and Brady and Carley Reitz. His grandchildren were a source of deep joy and quiet pride. The lessons he modeled — perseverance, thoughtfulness, humor, and self-reliance — will continue to guide them throughout their lives.

Jim is also survived by his sister-in-law, Shari Augins, along with extended family and many longtime friends. He was preceded in death by his parents, Anne and Henry Augins, and his brother, Warren Augins.

Those who knew Jim will remember his sharp mind, his understated humor, and his reserved but steady presence. He was not the loudest voice in the room, but when he spoke, people listened. His laughter — often unexpected and perfectly timed — brought warmth to those around him. He valued knowledge, meaningful conversation, and the quiet satisfaction of work done well.

Jim’s life was one of substance over spectacle, principle over pretense. His legacy lives on in the strength of his family and in the character he helped shape in those who loved him. He will be deeply missed and forever remembered.

A Celebration of Life service will be held on Friday, March 27, 2026, from 11:00 a.m. to 12:00 noon at Hayes Barton Place, the retirement community where Jim resided with his wife, Renee. The address is 2600 Yettington Drive, Raleigh, NC 27608.

Family and friends are invited to gather in remembrance and reflection. In Jim’s honor and memory, a traditional meal of condolence will be served following the service; kindly RSVP for planning purposes.
