James's obituary
James Barretta Ashe, affectionately known as Tank by family and JR by colleagues, passed away at the age of 49, leaving behind a legacy of love, loyalty, and laughter. Born and raised on the West Side of Chicago, JR brought light and joy into every room he entered. He was an old soul with a young spirit —wise beyond his years, yet full of life, curiosity, and warmth.
The cherished son of the late Bertha Ashe and James Gulley, JR was a man of strong values, deep family roots, and unwavering integrity. He built a respected career in sales and leadership, earning admiration for his drive, strategic mind, and ability to connect with people. His final role was with Verizon Wireless, where he served as the Associate Director of VEC-VCG in the Greater Chicago Area. His leadership, professionalism, and warm spirit left an indelible mark on colleagues and friends alike.
Tank began his education in Chicago Public Schools and went on to earn various certifications and professional achievements that reflected his passion for learning. He loved sharing knowledge—whether through advice, storytelling, or quiet example—and inspired those around him to grow and evolve.
James loved the finer things in life—trying new foods, shopping, and dressing sharp, always completing his look with one of his signature ascots. He was an avid basketball fan and found the most joy spending time surrounded by family and friends. His presence brought comfort, laughter, and a sense of belonging to those blessed to know him.
He was preceded in death by his mother, Bertha Ashe, his father, James Gulley, and his brother, David Gulley.
JR leaves to cherish his memory: his loving sisters, Sabrina Ashe and Angie Gulley, and stepmother, Beverly Gulley. His nephews and nieces, Steven, Samatha, Sedric, D’Andre (son/nephew), Denzel (son/nephew), Tiara, Isiah, Carla, Jaysyn, Amyre, Sed Jr., Semaj, Sydney, Julani, Olli, and Myla . He is also remembered with love by his sister, Lucretia Knowles; his brother, Brandon Goldberg (Rebecca Goldberg), Charles King (Tanya King) and bestfriend Kenneth Washington (JR), along with countless friends and extended family members.
