With deep sorrow, we announce the passing of Jameel "Carlis Thomas" Shaheed, fondly known to most as Carlis Thomas. Born on April 26, 1967, he departed this life on August 25, 2023. Carlis was a man of many qualities, bathing his world in the radiant light of his humor, intelligence, creativity, and outgoing personality.
Music was a significant part of Carlis's life. He was a dedicated fan of Duran Duran, and his passion extended to creating music himself. His love for rhythm and harmony found its way into every corner of his life, filling it with an inimitable melody of joy, vitality, and creativity.
In addition to music, Carlis had a keen interest in gaming. Whether it was watching gaming shows on television or immersing himself into the game, he truly loved the thrill of the world it presented. His fascination with the imaginative and expansive universes found within them allowed him the freedom to explore, learn and grow.
Carlis's jovial nature and unique sense of humor were infectious. His laughter brought delight to those around him, leaving a long-lasting impression on many. His legacy will always be remembered as one filled with fun, authenticity, and self-expression.
His memory lives on in the hearts of his family—his mother, Nadirah Shaheed; his father, Oliver Thomas; his brothers, Saleem Shaheed, Oliver Thomas, Omar Thomas, Sadat Thomas; and his sister, Ameenah Atkins. His niece, Olivia Thomas, also survives him. Their shared memories of Carlis paint a vivid picture of a man who lived life to the fullest, brought joy to every room, and was deeply cherished by those he loved.
Carlis' departure is a stark reminder of our mortality—"From God We Came; To God We Shall Return."
