Jacquelynne's obituary
Our Mother the Surgeon
It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Jacquelynne Corey Hain ("Jacky"), who left us peacefully in her sleep on November 15, 2024, at the age of 71, after a long battle with graft-versus-host disease. An esteemed professor of medicine and surgeon, she spent much of her life in Hyde Park, where she made a profound impact both professionally and personally. Throughout her distinguished career, Jacky became the first woman to achieve a full professorship in the Otolaryngology Department at the University of Chicago, inspiring colleagues and students alike with her brilliance, dedication, and commitment to patient care.
Born on June 10, 1953, in Chicago, Illinois, and raised in Sterling, Illinois, Jacky was the eldest daughter of Maurice and Frances Perou and the sister of three siblings: Deborah, Maureen, and Charles. While diligently following in her father's footsteps toward a career in medicine, she also nurtured a love for singing and music—a passion she cherished throughout her life.
Jacky’s first marriage to Alexander Corey Sr. was brief but impactful, as they shared a deep commitment to science and medicine. Together, they had two children: Melissa and Alex Corey Jr. Later, Jacky married Timothy Hain, a fellow lover of medicine, and the couple had two additional children: Benjamin and Elyse Hain.
In addition to her career, Jacky found great joy in gardening, teaching, singing, and indulging her love for the arts. She was a passionate opera enthusiast and loved singing with the choir, sipping tea, traveling, and immersing herself in the mystery of murder mystery shows. She also treasured the companionship of her beloved cat, Hazel.
A devoted mother, grandmother, sister, teacher, surgeon, mentor, opera lover, cat enthusiast, and tea aficionado, “Jacky” will be remembered for her quirky personality and kind heart. She is survived by her children, Melissa, Alex, Ben, and Elyse, as well as her grandchildren Rowan and Reese Corey. She was preceded in death by her first husband, Alexander Corey Sr.
A memorial service to celebrate Jacky’s life will be held on January 25, 2025, at 3:00 p.m. at St. Paul and the Redeemer. In honor of her generosity, the family requests that donations be made through this site on the "donations" page: https://everloved.com/life-of….
