Jacob's obituary
Jacob Daniel Glanton came into this wild world on June 15th, 1982 at 10:10am in Dallas, Texas. Born with pneumonia, Jacob spent the first week of his life in the NICU at Baylor Hospital. This led to a lifetime of worsening asthma, having to be revived on four separate occasions in the last few years. He spent 40 years here on earth before making his departure on May 2nd, 2023 in San Diego, California.
Jacob grew up in South Bend, IN surrounded by family and friends. He went to Lockport High School and attended Michiana College. A lifelong student at the school of hard knocks and a real ‘Jake of all trades’, he was a hard worker who enjoyed mental stimulation and working with people. His career as a waiter/bartender in both fine and casual dining establishments spanned nearly 25 years, including several years at Tippecanoe Place in South Bend, and at Hunter’s Steakhouse, and Pacific Beach Ale House in San Diego. He also worked with his dad in the cabinetry and classic car business, and began an electrician apprenticeship during the pandemic, with hopes to return to the restaurant industry.
Jacob was an avid lover of animals and had a special affinity for the San Diego Zoo and Safari Park. He loved playing basketball and poker, excelling at both. Creative by nature, he expressed his artistic side through painting. Mostly, he was always excited to make and share memories with his family and friends.
Jacob’s legacy is how he made a friend wherever he went, being an incredibly loyal and authentic person. His lifetime friendships include Wayne “Poppy” Smith, South Bend, IN; Mike O’Callaghan and Charles Barga of Joliet, IL. Among his many friends in San Diego, John Silsby was one that he was closest to, as was Peter Fisher. Jacob loved his dobermann Penny, cat Pete, and stepdog Jango.
Jacob is survived by his wife and soulmate Sarah Burch of San Diego, California; his mother, Anne DeFreeuw of South Bend, IN/Seattle, WA and father Steven Glanton (Linda Garret) of Hobart, IN; siblings Steve (Nicki) Smith of Marysville, OH; Cara (Daniel) McGowan of Las Vegas, NV; and Grace (Vladimir Naoumoff) Glanton of Seattle, WA; and his maternal grandma Ruth DeFreeuw of South Bend, IN. He was a proud FUNcle to Isaac, Madeline, Nathanael, Benjamin (Smith) and Morgan, Aidan, Ethan (McGowan). He had an abundance of loving aunts, uncles, and cousins. One of his best friends was his cousin Andrew DeFreeuw, and he always had a special place in his heart for his cousin Megan Whiteman-DeFreeuw.
He was predeceased by a sister, Lisbeth Glanton; paternal grandparents, Carl and Evelyn Glanton; maternal grandpa James DeFreeuw; uncle Ric Glanton; and nephew Elijah Smith.
There will be two mass intentions at Saint Matthew Cathedral in South Bend on May 19th at 5:30pm and June 15th at 7am. Celebration of life will be on Saturday, June 24th, 2023 in South Bend, Indiana, place and time TBD.
