Jackie's obituary

Medina, OH passed away peacefully on July, 5, 2023. Jackie was born May 12, 1943 in Spangler, PA to Jack and Margaret (nee Lehmier) Dowey and was the oldest of 9 children: Lois (Mike) Boston, Peggy Dowey, Sue Hendershot, Mike Dowey, Cliff (Laurie) Dowey, Jack Dowey, Teddi Dowey, Donny (Krystal) Dowey. Jackie was the beloved wife of Robert Smith, and loving mother to Eric (Kristi Hutchens) Smith of Gibsonville, NC, Angela (Michael) Keaton of Minerva, OH and Jay Smith of Denver, CO. Jackie was the absolutely adored nana of Tucker and Tanner Keaton - "my boys!". She had many cousins, nieces, nephews, and life-long friends. Her dog, Bella, was a faithful companion. Jackie is preceded in death by her parents, her husband, and her siblings: Peggy, Cliff, Sue, Lois, and Mike. Jackie received a bachelors in Social Study Comprehensive and a MaED in Teaching the Culturally Disadvantaged from the University of Akron. After graduating with her bachelors and while working on her MaED, Jackie was employed at the Akron YWCA Residential Intervention Center. After receiving her MaED, Jackie taught 20th century American history and American government at the Medina County Career Center / Joint Vocational School for 30 years. She was the first recipient of the Martha Holden Jennings Scholarship, the first recipient of the Golden Apple, and was also awarded a Robert Taft scholarship. She successfully secured a multi thousand dollar grant to build a dedicated Social Studies computer lab. Jackie was President of the Medina County Career Center Teacher's Association, the Social Studies Department Head, and a mentor to new Social Studies teachers. She helped initiate the first distance learning classroom in Northeast Ohio. Jackie loved the years she spent teaching. Jackie was a member of the League of Women Voters, the Medina County Association of University Women, and the 100 Plus Women of Medina County. She was an advisor to both the Office of Older Adults for Medina and the 5 County Office of Older Adults. Jackie was a founder and 12 year member of the Tea & Titles book club. She was in the Red Hat Society and a member of the Hospice Circle of Friends. Jackie was a member of AARP and enjoyed being a member of the Sunday Women's Dinner group. Jackie was an avid volunteer. She volunteered for 5 years at Feeding Medina County, the Wadsworth Senior Home for 3 years, and was awarded a Marine Corps garrison cover for her volunteer work with Toys for Tots. Jackie loved the 11 years she spent volunteering as a Docent at the Kennedy Stone House Museum at Salt Fork State Park. Jackie helped initiate the Garfield Families Food Program and coin jars for Seniors through her church, United Church of Christ, Congregational. Jackie created wonderful memories for her children, their cousins, and their friends by taking them on Grand Adventures: day trips and weekend excursions going to zoos, hotels with pools, museums, state parks, hiking spots, and anything else remotely considered a tourist attraction. These wonderful memories will be cherished forever. Jackie touched many lives in many ways, and will be deeply missed by those fortunate to have known and loved her. A Celebration of Her Life will be held 4:00 p.m., Tuesday, July 11, 2023 at the  Church of Christ, Congregational, 777E. Liberty St., Medina 44256. Light dinner to follow.
