Jack's obituary

Jack J. Cohen, a member of “The Greatest Generation”, passed away peacefully at home in the early morning of January 16th, 2022. He was 97 years old. This past November, he and his devoted wife Elsie, celebrated 75 years of marriage. A celebration of life service will be held this Sunday, January 30th, at 1:00 pm.

Jack grew up in Baltimore, Maryland. He enlisted in the Navy at 18 and spent WWII on an LST. The letters stand for Landing Ship, Tank. LST’s supported amphibious operations by carrying tanks, vehicles, cargo, and landing troops directly onto shore with no docks or piers. After the war he chose to be a watchmaker and was trained under the G.I. Bill. Jack owned Uptown Jewelers for over 30 years, which started in Pimlico and ended up in Pikesville, Maryland.

Jack loved sports and was a great athlete. He was a lifelong fan of the Baltimore Orioles and was the kind of guy who liked to talk “stats”. Playing sports was his outlet, his stress buster. His favorite sports to play were golf and tennis, and he excelled at both. At his peak, he probably played golf twice a week and tennis 4 to 5 times a week. In tennis, guys like him are known as a “retriever”. You think you’ve hit a winner but a retriever always runs it down and forces another shot.

Jack retired and moved to Delray Beach, Florida in the early 90’s. Life was filled with travel, golf, tennis and special times with children and grandchildren. He and Elsie enjoyed many years together living a full and happy life.
He is survived by his wife Elsie, one son, Dennis and three grandchildren, Dylan, Savion and Kaden. He is preceded in death by two children, Barbara and Ronald. For more information contact his son Dennis. (dcohenfl@comcast.net)
