San Antonio, Texas
It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of Jack A. Baker Jr., a cherished friend, devoted patriot, and exemplary man, who passed away peacefully on December 5, 2024, at the age of 84. Jack leaves behind a remarkable legacy of service, integrity, and love that touched the lives of all who had the privilege of knowing him.
Born on October 17, 1940, in Stillwater, Oklahoma, Jack was the only son of the late Jack A. Baker Sr. and Mary (Gardner) Baker. His childhood was shaped by a deep appreciation for friendship, compassion, and empathy, qualities that remained with him throughout his life. Jack graduated from Stillwater High School in 1958, where he was involved in a student-led radio program, This is Your School, aired on KSPI Radio. He went on to earn a Bachelor of Science in Hotel and Restaurant Administration from Oklahoma State University, where his father proudly coached the university’s football team. While at OSU, Jack worked as the Coffee Shop Manager at the Student Union and later became the Service Dining Room Manager. He played an integral role in designing, staffing, and operating two new food service operations at the OSU Student Union.
Jack’s professional journey continued at the University of Missouri in Kansas City, where he served as Assistant Director of Housing and the University Center. He later worked as an Assistant Food Service Manager at the Memorial Union on the Columbia campus. Jack was also a proud cadet in the Arnold Air Society, demonstrating leadership and camaraderie.
In addition to his academic and professional achievements, Jack served his country with distinction in the United States Air Force. As the Flight Commander of the 670th AFROTC, he exemplified the highest values of courage, integrity, and dedication. His time in the military left a lasting impact, and he carried these principles into every aspect of his life.
After his military service, Jack’s career led him to Texas, where he made a lasting impact at the University of Texas at El Paso. In 1969, he became the first Director of The Union at UTEP, where he forged meaningful connections with students, staff, and faculty. In 1976, Jack was instrumental in the creation of the University’s Special Events Center. By 1980, he had been promoted to Director of Auxiliary Services, overseeing the student union, food services, campus concessions, the university bookstore, and the housing system. Jack continued his work in Texas at the Gary Job Corps Center in San Marcos, where he served as Director of Food Services until his retirement in 1997.
Even in retirement, Jack’s dedication to community service remained unwavering. He served as Secretary of the San Antonio Restaurant Association (SARA) for two decades and was involved with numerous local organizations. He also managed his business, Bace Ice Equipment, and served as president of the nonprofit organization DBC. Jack's relentless drive, passion, and commitment to service were a beacon of inspiration to all who knew him.
Jack will be honored with Military Funeral Honors on January 7, 2025, at 10:15 AM, at Fort Sam Houston Cemetery. His life and legacy will continue to inspire and uplift those who were fortunate to have known him.
In lieu of flowers, Jack’s wishes were to kindly donate to your favorite charity or organization—a cause deeply meaningful to Jack, making a strong impact in the community.
Rest in peace, Jack A. Baker Jr. Your legacy of kindness, perseverance, and love will forever live on in our hearts, and your light will continue to guide us.
